New trowel advice

Been plastering a bit more seriously last couple of years and been using an 11" Tyzack trowel. Also got a 14" nela s*p*r*lex but thinking about buying a new trowel for laying on...13/14" etc.

Any thoughts on what to buy, MT, Nela etc?

Cheers for your thoughts!!

Ok. I'm new to forum so prob missed similar threads :)
Was just funny all the talk of trowels here lately.MT is probably the most popular but some prefer tyzack or Nela. It's all down to what you like yourself and leave good work with it.I use MT mostly and MT xtralight carbon for finishing.Have a refina super flex that gets used sometimes as well.Best of luck anyway.

I love nela but have MT's broken in and I dont do enough to break a trowel in again...

The good thing is trowels seem to hold their value so you could buy all of them and have a play and see what you think and sell the ones you dont like on ebay :D

Thanks Nicm. Yeah I know it prob was a daft question...just haven't got years of experience...

Your best going to a decent merchants that stock several different ones and get a feel of them before you buy. Marshall Town Extralite stainless steel (not pre worn or durashape gold handle) takes ages to break in but brilliant. Refina and Nela also very good and boils down to what feels best for you?? if any lads have different trowels on your site or whatever ask to have a try ?? no point shelling out for a trowel that may look good but come to use it and feels all wrong you've wasted your cash !!??

ive just bought the mt extralite trowel great trowel personaly I thik the nela blade is a bit on the thick side take some burning in and the tyzack flimsy soft etal bends out of shape to easy

I use a "Tyzack" for Skimming, had it over 22 years and I wouldn't use anything else. I have recently bought a "Ragni" 14" but it will be a good 10 years before I use for Skimming.

It really is debatable when it comes to trowels but I go with the philosophy of the trowel having to be well broken-in before being used for finishing.

But it really is up for debate and each individual is different.

That's my nela, your right it took a while to break in it's still pretty square around the edges but a decent skimmer. It will out last my mt I'm sure. At the moment I favour my 13x5 carbon mt, a good all rounder and I first started using a 13 so I'm back where I started. Carbon breaks in quick aswell so ideal.

Thanks for replies everyone. I should have said at the start that in multi trade and not a full time plasterer so really need something that's pretty good to go out of the box. I'm getting decent results with the tyzack but also think the blade is a bit flimsy so that's why I'm asking the question and now I've had a fair bit of skimming under my belt, thought a slightly bigger trowel may be the way to go. Would a MT pre worn be the way to go? I'm also getting more picky with my work and every time I do some I'm getting a little bit better but also under no illusion that a new trowel is going to turn me into a time served spread, but I take a lot of pride in what I do. Just want to make sure I'm armed properly :)

Don't overcomplicate it, if your existing trowel feels comfortable in your hand stick to it, there's no such thing as wondertrowel out there, new gadgets can make life easier tho

A Mt pre-worn is probably your best bet for using straight away. I started using my nela premium a few days ago and it's lovely to use but that was after nearly a year of rendering

One thing I think spreaders know is that 'Brand new' will leave lines in your 1-2 coats purely because the corners are still sharp. Taking the edges out of the trowel makes life easier, I know a spreader that uses a grinding wheel to round his edges off.

But equally I know spreaders that are quite happy to Skim with straight out the box trowels.

It really is personal preference.

Right mate, as you are a multiguy, and not an experienced plasterer, I risk being thrown out of "the circle" for divulging this information but I reckon you're an ok fella and wouldn't drop me in the s**t....closer now.......you need to get a magic trowel, easy to use, leaves no lodans, (oops I meant ripples), stays clean, never wears out and best of all you can use it straight out of the velvet lined mahogany case that it comes in.
How do you get one???? Ahh well, that's where the experience comes in. Lol

Thanks again to all have replied.
Think will go with a MT as pretty standard I suppose. I'm not expecting miracles by buying and using a new trowels, but I suppose I need a comparison to my old trowel to see if I can gain a few percent in terms of finish.
I'm getting more relaxed and confident with getting the gear on the wall, getting it flatter, edges and ceiling lines getting neater and straighter. My brother in law is a pretty good plasterer but I don't get much chance to work alongside him so all I can do at the mo is ask you guys and try and get better.
Cheers

That's good thinking. I have the MT Permaflex and it's spot on. Have you ever thought about inviting Jesus into your life? I work alongside him every day and I never have a problem.

That's good to hear. The next time you work with him, ask him to contact his dad, as I haven't spoke to him in a while!

Mark 6:3 "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him."

So what you're saying is that I shouldnt rush out and buy a speed skim? Stick to my guns?!

Speedskim will get those ceiling edges flat.... Seek the light

Agree @Squarehead . I use them all over the work for that reason alone, specially on reskims, arisses, internals, ceiling and skirting lines look the nuts.

Went to a job last week where it'd just been skimmed by builders plasterer (over artex) customer wasn't happy with wavy ceiling edge. Speedskim got it bang on. Happy customer.

Think at this rate, I might be better buying a bible than a new trowel :D
Thanks guys...think I'm a bit more enlightened! God bless you all...
