Down rather than sown!

Hello, I am new to the group and learning. I have seen that when plastering over scrim tape joints that a slight ridge can be sometimes seen sown the joint in the finished wall. Does anyone bed in paper tape first rather than scrim tape to avoid this? Thank you.
