    Old legend

I won't be retiring, just doing something different 'change is as good as rest'. I might take up plastering? With a bit of practical training from @Nisus and one of those bold trowel courses I'll be good to go.

    Taking off radiators?

I'd suggest Occam's razor would favour aerosol contact adhesive over all of them. Still, it's not something I need to worry myself about.

    Taking off radiators?

That's a hugely important point, it's not just the work you are taking on for whatever you charge. You are also taking on any and all risks should anything go wrong. That's why all trades (should) have insurance, but just as importantly know what it does and doesn't cover you for. I doubt many...

Fair play to them, but if I get into my 60s or 70s and haven't thought of something better to do with my time I'll want shooting.

    Council charging for waste now!

If only there was a system to get rid of it. Sort of use water to wash it away into a tube that went somewhere so that it could be filtered and processed back into clean water. It's save making the place smell of stinky bum bum poo poo. Maybe one day something will be invented and we can all...

    Council charging for waste now!

"In August 2018, a high profile story was published by a number of news outlets about a roofer who was fined £300 for carrying a plastic bag with empty crisps packets in his van. " You can be fined up to £5,000 for not having a license if you should, and basically any tradesman/woman should...

    Council charging for waste now!

@Nisus was presented with a birthday cake. Carried up the stairs to him by the customer and her mother whilst singing happy birthday.

    Council charging for waste now!

I'm not taking the p1ss, but it's a bit different if you're a full time tradesman (should that be tradesperson now?). Leave aside the volumes of stuff I generate on a large job, it's the bitty stuff that's the hassle. Stuff like couple of board off cuts, some empty gripfill tubes, half a tin of...

    Council charging for waste now!

That's just so that you can legally carry 'waste'. You have to have one to book in with commercial waste, the fee to tip is on top of that and varies across the country. If you get a pull at a spot check anything that can count as waste will mean you get a big fine if you haven't got a license.

    Moral dilemma 2

Keep them and say nothing otherwise you'll be breaking plasterer's union rules.

BTW, is that bloke Stanley Unwin's son?

They seem like a reasonable idea apart from the additional depth they add. Most of the stuff we do is double beams, so just use timber off cuts between them and screw to those with a bead of fire rated grab adhesive along the length of the beam. Single beams get a double bead of fire rated grab...

    New in plastering?

I honestly reckon that the whole mobile phone/social media thing is an addiction like gambling or alcohol. People cannot bear to be separated from them and start to get really stressed if they can't get a signal. It's not just youngsters either, it seems to happen to people in their 40s...

    New in plastering?

I'd put all those in as changes to stuff that existed already tbh, with the exception of spraying. That was the sort of stuff we were talking about, the only new thing in that list is the machine. Aside from that and the introduction of boards it's the same trade as 100 years ago and requires...
