Years back I did the venetian applicators course at Golden Trowell. We did all parts of the process with venetian trowels. These were hard so you coulld polish it and stainless steel so no marks were left. Carbon steel will leave stains.
If you use a primer then it's guaranteed to stay adhered. If you don't then there is the potential for failure in the future. Adaptavate Smooth, a lime based finish plaster, can go straight onto plasterboard. But most other bagged limes that I have used recommend applying a grit based primer...
You'll need to the prime the boards with first with a grit primer to get a mechanical key. I normally use Baumit Premium Primer, so as to maintain breathability, but you could also use Febond Blue grit, or similar, as well.
