Skimming over artex blog

It's very informative, but simply worded. Loads of pics. I like it. Should do well on the flesch test. Customers would do well to read through it so they can know what to expect.

I did an artex ceiling last week. I was packing away and the girl's mum was just stood there in the middle of the room staring at the ceiling. I asked if everything was okay and she said the wouldn't be happy because they wanted to paint over the ceiling and you could still see the pattern. I explained you'd see the pattern come through as it dried out because of the different depths of the artex but that once fully dry you wouldn't see it. She didn't believe me. She went n the other room and was whispering and then her old fella came in and was staring at it as well. Unbelievable. I got the ladders out of the van and told him to get up and rub his hand over it so he could see it was flat. But he said he'd just had a pacemaker fitted. Told them to wait a couple of days and paint it before they paid me. Got a payment into the bank a few days later. No text or phone call to apologize, though.

we always obliterate comb pattern ceilings with a coat of bonding .

i actually did bond the first ceiling i plastererd but it didn't work so well. The thickness of the skim and bonding was unnecessary and tore a bit during troweling up, so i binned that and came back with a nail float and thicker skim. the one with the bonding was the poorest looking and didn't dry a solid color.
I have this rubber faced spatula aswell which i tried out on that ceiling . i will see if i can add a video.

I was looking at that the other day. That and the Super Prod

So i used this rubber bladed spat as the plaster was setting on the bonding but the bonding was tearing bit. the rubber blade smoothed things over for a bit till it went of enough for a steel trowel. I didnt have a plastic trowel with me on that set but it worked well enough

we do scrape, pva, one coat diluted, applied very tight so no waiting, bonding mixed with hardwall 50/50 applied tight and dosed to set very quickly. this method gives you a little suction for the skim. with no artex pattern showing through the skim.
the skim will playup if bonding not dosed.

Depends how heavy the texture and how well you scrape it surely. We bonded our first ceiling as i mentioned and it didnt work as well as the next ones where i just used a good coat of skimming to flatten it out. As i say in the blog there are many ways to do it depending on your past experiences ,your skill level and you will use the method works best for you, We left a perfectly flat ceiling , left the place clean and tidy and got paid on time and we didnt scour the knicker drawers, What more can we do?;)

Nice blog chief. Well written. Good idea with nailed scraper. Making sure to be aware of the light is useful. Good tips for the less experienced.
