What funding is available to a normal plastering firm. We are not CITB registered and I doubt we ever will be unless we can be shown it's a advantage to us.

We undertake all forms of internal and external plastering, alot of internal spray plastering which we could teach kids quickly.

We have good levels of work to be able to take some youngsters on but I get the feeling it's gonna end up costing us to train them up.

I've tried to find this info but no one seems to ever come up with it.

It's a load of bolloxs pal u get a grant but by time uve trained them up put them thru college bought them tools, spent time with them, payed them whilst there do there block release u mite make a tiny profit or break even makes me laugh how there think there are doing the world a favour by posting kids u seasons and other colleges make tons out of posting apprentices and I know this as my mates aunty works at Leeds college of building

Im off until from 22nd- 4th January so i cant answer Rigsbys one just now until i speak to the academy tutor and find out what happened, but i do know they do get taught this in the first two weeks so im keen to know whats happened on this case.

What a training provider gets varies as it depends what college contract they are given but all colleges only release the funding grant when a learner completes their apprenticeship.

The thing is, kids today are f**k**g useless. I bet less than 10% finish their apprenticeships. Their either full of attitude, or thick as s**t.

I had a 17 year old in July this year. He had been to Geasons in Manchester but had not been taught how to use a hand board and trowel. So no experience what so ever. I had him for 3 weeks at £150 a week and did no labouring.

Most of our work in that 3 week period was machine work so little chance of using a trowel. But he did learn about the machine side.

4th week I paid him for a week back at Geasons and £80 petrol. Did they teach him how to use a hand board and trowel? No. Nvq in English.

He failed to tirn up on the Monday of the 5th week so he had to go. £680 down the drain!

What I suggest to Geason is if they are going to have these lads in their Manchester training cemtre then at least teach them how to fill a hand board up with plaster and then get 1 trowel full off leaving 2 trowel fulls left on. It will be a good start.

Also payments monthly. A lot of lads quit within the 13 week period so usually the contractor pays out with no return.

Now, I will start a trainee off labouring. They will have to cover their wages from day 1. No more paying out wages for training only when they quit before they start to earn pay back.

There is a point above about wages for a trainee. Lads are or may be affordable but a 21 + year old even on nmw will probably not cover his wages as a trainee. There does become an awkward stage when the skill goes up then the wage goes up. But then if the trainee is the labourer as well then there becomes a time when the trainee needs more than a labourers wage but also he doesn't have time to labour anymore.

can you give me a number to call you on to discuss this further.

thanks
Lynn

Who pays for the apprentice? When I done mine I was at college done work with @superspread and even had to get a weekend job to survive well on the money he was paying I had to unless he got a massive grant and never told me I did wonder how he was always buying nice things

Wen we put 1 thru college nvq we got £1500 for 1 year only but we had to pay £500 upfront to the college so minus that and paying them that day a week there go college etc u dont make anything but the college gets about £7000 a year from government there get more for block release apprentices

I had two jobs back when I started I just loved a pound note I suppose

The employer pays the apprentice wage etc but if you are citb registered then citb pay out a minimum grant of £3525 for a 1 year apprenticeship and minimum of £6000 for a 2 year apprenticeship - so the employer makes his money back from the grant.

Paid 13 weeks in arrears. What if the apprentice quits within 13 weeks? Most do.

Like I said above, no full time training anymore. They will have to cover their wages from day 1. A grant if it ever happens will be a bonus.

That £680 I wasted would have bought me a PFT Jetset Pro. That would have made me money over years to come. Instead in that lads pocket and out of mine.

There is only one teacher at our local college and he's useless.
He Was a plasterers labourer 10 years ago and has NO site experience, just a few years spreading.
I bet he couldn't even skim a full room

thats common... I know there are tutors who have gone straight from level 3 straight to being a lecturer
