The blame game

Had a job this week doing a staircase rip out and redo.

My labourer stapled sheets to carpet and triggered the alarm, customer put code in to stop it and it wouldnt stop, anyway he immediately got the blame for stapling through cable.

We couldn't find the damage in cable, alarm still sounding, I turned the independent fuse off for it and flicked it back on, alarm stopped, sorted.

Customer then tells me that we have to pay to have it fixed, i think she was hoping id knock it off the bill but i was adamant it wasn't out fault, she was sure as hell it was us.

so today, i had the alarm engineer out, free diagnosis and a quote to fix it, turns out we didn't break anything, my lab just disturbed it and set it off, reason it wouldn't stop was because the battery in the internal unit was flat as fook so it wouldn't turn off, also the magnets on front door, 1 is missing so the alarm thinks the front door is constantly open, another reason it wouldn't stop.

The lying git also told me they had been using the alarm for ages with no problems and when alarm engineer tells me they couldn't have set it at all as it won't set, due to the flat battery and the missing magnet.

£80.00 i could have been stung for there, unfortunately i had to tell this to the customer via text but would have loved to tell her to her face.

we've had it a lot lately, and we get it with the rendering where we just get blamed for everything, like when someone plant pot blows over 3 doors up. "be them fooking builders down road"

funny how they change though and jump straight on your for it, i immediately had to set out proving it wasn't us, guilty until proven innocent

Sounds like a right cow wanting something for nothing. I had it the other day, went for payment off a woman and she gave me the money £50 short, I showed her my diary with the date and price in it and she disappeared in the house to get her "book" daft bitch must have been in scribbling down my name and her imaginary price on it. There was a bit of a stand off for 5 minutes but I got it in the end, she can foxtrot oscar when she calls me back to skim her hallway after xmas.

What a c**t!

Do you have to go back to do anything else?
I'd love to see there face as they try to talk there way out the bull s**t they spoke!
Fair play for doing what you did though!

Did they apologise?

I'm only joking with you bud.

seriously, no, it was just the alarm, but we have had it a lot lately, rigsby reckons it happens when you are younger, people doubt you and don't trust what you say, which i think is true.

she didn't apologise just thanked me for sorting alarm engineer out, it didn't cost me anything just a quick phone call point being though how quick we were blamed and how easily i could have been nearly £100 out of pocket.

iv been blamed for breaking a window on a render job before, a quick look showed it was the inside pane on double glazing that had cracked, i just asked her to explain how we managed to break the inside of her window and she shut up and toddled off inside

They will always try to blame you for what they think they can get away with.
Sneaky fucks.
The thing you can't go round every job prior to starting and check everything's working/not broke can you.
It's usually not till your up close you spot things aswell.

my customer service has gone to s**t over the last year to be honest.

i had one guy who put a 8/10 inch facia up the day before we sprayed so i ripped it down threw it off scaffolding and down drive as i could not get gun straight on it, nearly cost me £4000 lol, he moaned like fook, he also altered his downpipes mid job and moaned at me because they didn't fit after.

had a sloppy chopped b*****d of a next door neighbour telling my i was ripping my OAP customers off, asked him how much a bag of mono was which couldn't answer so i told him to fook off then as he didn't know what he was on about.

been stressful this year

If you threw my s**t off a scaffold youd be down the road with no pay and a bill.

You can't let your emotions get the better of you, customer relations is everything, you need to nip that kind of behaviour in the bud.

i agree to an extent, but some will take the piss and try it on, maybe my age, maybe because I'm too nice at the start of a job, had another where we were accused of blocking drain and threatened with no payment on 200M2 of k-rend until we'd sorted it, labourer gets his hand down s**t pipe to pull hand full after hand full of wet wipes out.

he was told not to fit facias until we had rendered several times over as we couldn't get under them to render, so he nailed them on the night before we sprayed the area, then moaned because id ripped them off, i didn't have time mid spray to get off scaffold and have a conversation about some facias he fitted that he was told not to.

Fair enough then, thought you just ripped them off cos they were getting in your way...if you warned him previously not to do it then a bit different.

With things like this if there is an issue I'll never lose my rag.
If I know I've not done what I'm accused of I smile tell the customer that I don't believe it was me, I'll fix mend or what ever it is needed and if I can prove it wasn't me I'll charge for my time after.

If it's small things that take me seconds or minutes I'll just do it without question to keep them happy.
If I know there trying to blag but I can't prove it wasn't me I'll stand my ground and politely explain.

As much as a client can be a nause my reputation is worth more than to stand there and call them names or argue over little things and they then bad mouth me.

No one mentioned name calling, or losing rag.

Fact is when someone is withholding payment and you want to get your bills paid up for labour materials etc and they start fabricating excuses to withhold payment there comes a time when you politely but firmly tell them it's time to pay up.

The more you jump to their tune the more they will take the piss, don't get me wrong I agree with giving them 1/4 of a day or attempting to rectify their grievances but at times they will test your limits and see what they can get.

That was a generalisation mate of what I do and not aimed at you or your quote.
I get what you mean with expecting payment when you know you've done a good job. Nothing worse!

Agree with you there, your only as good as your last job.

Agree with everything you say mac, I've a bit of age on me now & can look back at the people who took the piss, and advantage of my good nature.
We are who we are today because of our past, and although I'm still the easy going nice fella that's begging to have the piss taken, this worm can now turn!
Another reason I try and stay away from domestics this is, constant f**k**g hassle.
