Can someone tell me the procedure for tiling onto ashphalt floor. Does it require a primer of some kind before adhesive.

Nearly every tile adhesive i have ever used states on the bag that a primer should be used on bitumenous floors however, i have used it direct onto it before on small areas with budget tiles up to approx 6-8m2 without any issues but don't think i would be so brave on a large floor with expensive tiles.

Would an Uncoupling membrane work in this situation?.
I'd of thought adhesive would struggle to adhere with the amount oil in bitumen.

What kind of primer @raggles
I have in the past cleaned the floor thoroughly put self leveler on and then tiled onto that but used leveler and adhesive from same manufacturer. I have also used 1:1 sbr/water and cement added and tiled onto that. Just depends how flat the floor is before you start as to which way you go.

They have a membrane out that is used for fresh concrete that removes the need to wait for it to dry.
Lots of people are now using them for dodgy surfaces that shouldn't be tiled over.
Saves on a lot of prep work but you need the extra depth.

Thats the one.

Ive only tiled over bitumen once I scuffed it up then latexed it which may of been unnecessary but they've stayed down.

Don't you put the matting onto the floor with tile adhesive. I understand it's a good product but doesn't this give the same possible issue of putting tiles directly on the floor using the same adhesive.

think the theory behind it is that the mat and tiles become one and if they together lift from the substrate it will still be functional in that it is then much like a floating floor. If that makes sense?
