Heart problems

I'm not sure about heart problems. I would think heart problems are likely more related to genetics and a poor diet and lifestyle. You're going to get the wear and tear on joints, and if you're unlucky respiratory problems. Breathing in silica, slate dust, asbestos etc isn't doing you any good. I think parking your fat arse behind a desk all day with your only exercise being the trip to the vending machine would more likely lead to heart problems.

I enjoy the physical nature of he work. It keeps me fit. Sciatica a few years back that acupuncture sorted. Elbow bursitis a few weeks back that turmeric sorted. Had the middle aged health check and was told I was in the bottom 2% of those likely to suffer from heart problems, diabetes etc. But that doesn't mean I won't. Life's a lottery. Some are more unfortunate than others no matter what they have done. Just keep paying the life insurance.

unfortunately i know a little bit about heart attacks. i had my first one ,which i would call a big one when i was 41. i did not even have the energy to walk for a few weeks, off work for 12 weeks , just given an asprin and told to take things easy!
at 57, i had a couple of tiny heart attacks, sharp pain for a couple of mins then everything back to normal . i had tests at the hospital, then off to st barts for a bypass x 4. this op was done by a top professor of cardiology as the bypass had to be done from the back of the heart as the front of my heart was to damaged from my first attack.
after my bypass, off work for 20 weeks, i went into a rehab. centre to learn how to eat and exercise correctly. the heart should beat fast at least twice a day. the trouble with work we all find an easy way so it is not exercise.
i now feel fine, my blood pressure is correct, i can carry out any task that i set myself and work full time either plastering or screeding.

Costa del (crime) sol :descansando:

Worked out there myself in the mid 90's although mostly in Gib, few houses up around Sotogrande.
Now thats hot work :) used to put the bricks in a bucket of water and they would sizzle.
Hardly recognise the place now its so built up, i was a big fan of Estapona beach but its like a city now.
Nice lifestyle , fair play to ya , bet your having a beer outside somewhere now :)

Well your living proof that the work doesn't kill you! Screeding is one of the most stressful jobs in the trade, you cant hang about there.

Its a tough one , i agree with Jurek , the office job is what i would imagine causes heart problems.
Was talking to a mate about it and i agree with him too , stress is the big killer and probably attacks the heart more than any other organ.

Iv c lads on building site worried about dust whering a mask and we should do it is a killer .and then smoke during the day we go on about blaming the dust ol the time when we harm our self in other ways to .by the way hard days work never killed anybody
Plenty died from overwork, it's like everything in life ,it depends, lots of idiots like you say ,I have body building friends who are hugely fussy about what the eat ,(the diet is everything) yet some do steroids, coke, and pills) but wouldn't eat a bacon sandwich
Lots on here obviously worry about their health, they're many on here who constantly balance work between illness and operations , just ask anyone about my knees @irish_spread

There's an old saying my gran use to say what good is it to man to win the world and loose his health and life .So in other words keep away from stress and killing your self the old saying are not far from their place

Was down here mid eighties always loved it , so came back in 2005. Im up near funkyroller (fuengirola) but spent some time down manilva, sabanillas, puerto de la duquesa, estepona working from algeciras to torremolinos. Worked san roque club, sotogrande , marbella, zagaletta etc. Was 25 pesetas ( 10p)for a san miguel , hard to bust a 1000 peseta note when first came down that spain is just a place in my head now long gone.:guitarra::birras::maraca:

I've known a few spreads that were / are inveterate alcoholics. Constantly topping themselves up,. Vodka coffees in the morning. Constantly checking their watches. Eyes like rats looking for an early dart. Used to drink four Guinness in the happy hour years ago and have a few in the pump. Those days are long gone. Don't know any pubs like that anymore.

boiling water can make a potato soft or an egg hard, each person will be affected in different ways

I do also think when your time is up its up...

I read a quote the other week and it rings true with me...

"Rather live a short exciting life than a long boring one"

Ok this thread has run its course and if we're not careful someone will develop significant heart problems whilst swinging by the neck from a noose o_O

Yeah , got a bit heated!
Think the general gist is that plastering has no increased heart risk over other jobs and in fact the nature of the job may help with fitness.
Stress is more likely a factor as we are mostly self-employed and work tends to come feast of famine style.

The alcohol is an interesting one , most plasterers i know are heavy drinkers , knew a few that drank in the morning on site and kept topping up , special brew too , know loads more smoked weed and drank heavily at lunchtimes.
I cant have a beer the night before a big job and defo couldnt smoke weed or have a pint , can see how that would be damaging :)

All good healthy banter exactly what you would expect on a site , should be app on here you can nail someones bag to the scaffold boards or knock em over in the thunder box :cachetada::whistle:
