Whats peoples views on plastering and heart/health problems?
Im 43 and HR and pressure etc is all 100% and ive always sort of thought the plastering was keeping me fit , giving the heart a good workout sort of thing.
But ive been hearing mixed stories about working above head height causing problems , sure thats every ceiling we do.
And google suggests plasterers have a higher heart attack rate than most.
90% of what i do is skimming and it can be hard , really felt it last couple of days with the heat and wondering if its beneficial or detrimental to be running hot.
Any views?

It's only a problem when your not able to do it!
Keep at it you'll be ok!

Ive been out of the game like this for about 8 years , i dunno if i can still do it :)
Struggled today , 3 hits to finish a job and sweat never dried on me , dunno if thats good for me or bad for me!

Docs told my old man he had a heart of a teenager....... Dropped dead 3weeks later massive heart attack, plasterer only 59

Thats the thing , you would think the grafting keeps you healthy and ticking over but the more i read on it the more i think it could be damaging.
My dad was a plasterer , heart attacks and strokes and all sorts , hes long retired but i always put that down to his drinking.

Im 47 and trust me it gets hot over here 35- 45c at mo and yes heart banging away when pushing yerself but i'd be more worried if it was nt . Games hard so eat well keep hydrated and run .cycle ,swim or just shag lots cardiovascular and hope youve taken genes from your longer lived relatives.
Above enjoy yer time here and be kind to yerself and others best you can

My dads 79 stopped plastering 3 years ago, has COPD for the last 10 years but that's from smoking years ago, still relatively fit, and puts it down to work.
Goes to the gym now lol!

My dads 75, retired but still active plasterer. Never drank or smoked, broke his bollix working 6/7 days a week from 15 till 69, never a day off work or sick in 54 years. Loads of various heart problems now, hip replacement, shoulder pain etc. Diet probably and family history possibly

Don't worry to much m8 enjoy every day don't let money turn into greed and enjoy your work and life

I worried about my ticker. I was diagnosed with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy and Atrial Fibrillation years ago when I was overdoing it with work and out on the piss. Had a funny turn at work and my left arm starting going numb and tingly and I went dizzy. Scared the s**t out of me!
The hard graft is pretty much unavoidable in this game and I wonder when I'll push myself that bit too far again.
Just got to do your best to avoid stress, eat well, rest properly and don't turn yourself inside out to line some builders pocket! Look after number 1! Is money really worth killing yourself for?!

dust... we should be wearing dust masks... and in time it will be normal... not many chippies now dont wear gloves... not many plumbers dont use anti bac cleaner...

not many mechanics dont wear latex gloves...

we need to wear masks and good ones...

I agree, I pull down alot of lath and plater and I used cheap paper ones with the metal strip above the nose, all it seemed to do was just let the dust circulate closer around my mouth and nose. Should really invest in a decent dust mask

So no real evidence that plastering is damaging to the heart over any other stressful job.
What about the working above your head thing? is that just a myth?

Dust is a killer , i know someone with major problems from scraping K-Rend.
When i was a kid , 14! i was put into pull down ceilings , i know some of them would of been asbestos.
I pulled one down in the city centre a few months ago , inches deep in dust from the traffic , said i would never do another one.

Its the mentality too , i worked with a gang of lads doing fireproofing for a petroleum tanker , i took a photo of the materials and searched them , all major carcinogenic.
Crap PPE and nobody cared , once the real dangerous stuff was used the lads were taking the PPE off cos it was in the way and too hot etc. I walked off the job , found out a few of them ended up in hospital with allergic reactions , scary what the ones with no symptoms could suffer in the future!
And all for £15 an hour :( yet nobody cared for their health

I have been spraying 2k paint for my car and teh mask I use for that is great... I may invest in an oxygen fed mask soon as well... which is not a bad idea for plasterers...

lath and plaster is desperate... it cannot be healthy...

we are along time dead

Iv c lads on building site worried about dust whering a mask and we should do it is a killer .and then smoke during the day we go on about blaming the dust ol the time when we harm our self in other ways to .by the way hard days work never killed anybody
