Recently I've been giving a local plasterer a dig out,he's a good bit older than me and I've a lot of respect for him and his work is top notch, really old school. When it comes to skimming he uses joint filler over the self adhesive scrim.I've always just flushed out the joints with skim at the start of the gauge.Just wondering do any lads here use the joint filler.

he joint fills his work then skims it??? wow... he must be bored

I just fill out with skim at the start of the gauge but isn't that how the lads who use spray finish and do airless?

He reckons it gives better protection against joints cracking.I find it a bit of a nuisance, the skim pulls in quicker on the filler.

He could be correct but I don't see any major benefit as we just skim standard square edge boards without problem and the skim is much thinner in this circumstance.i agree that it sounds like it would be a nuisanse

Put a thread up on this myself as i often wondered myself , general consensus seemed to be that it leaves less chance of scrim showing but not 100% necessary.
Compromise would be swift run over the with the start of the gauge

I did a job in Ireland for a stubborn farmer/builder, give him a price for a new build dormer bungalow, I turned up the first day he insisted I taped up all joints with joint filler and paper tape before skimming! Strange one.

I floated a room out for an engineer once... that was hard work... because he works with zero tolerances... he thought we did as well... he was happy when I left but god I wanted to walk off

In Ireland gupsum only stand by paper tape and joint filler over joints be for u skim. Don't stand by scrim

I just don't think there's anything to be gained by using j filler on joints before skimming. It's actually a hindrance waiting for it to go off. Some guys are just set in their ways I suppose.

Paper tape is 7 times stronger than scrim

I never knew it was that much stronger.I remember my father using it years ago, he used to keep the roll of tape damp before he used it.And he used the brown hessian scrim around the edges of the ceilings down onto the block work.

The paper tape is an excellent job, but you'd want more money for using it, it's a pain.
If boarding is done properly there is no problem with the scrim however, it won't crack.
Gyproc won't stand over it because they don't make it.

If using the paper tape though, it makes no difference what you fill it with.

I've used bg scrim (self adhesive tape)

In theory joint filler has less shrinkage then multi finish so it would help protect against crowning which can occur as there is more material to shrink back in the tapered edge.

Paper taper is much stronger as well.

It's a right ball ache to do if you don't have the right tools to do it.

Is he doing internals with paper as well?

I work with zero tolerance every day, zero tolerance for people who piss me off! [emoji109]

He's not using any paper tape, just joint filler over the scrim.

Joint filler will shrink less however I can't see the point if he's then double coating with multi
