Was doing bands today and the bands where cracking had to keep sponging to get them out. It was hot today. Anyone an idea what was causing it

could it have been poor quality sand ----- or preparation work prior to starting ??? did you prepare any different to your normal prep

The sun and heat even in Ireland can cause cracking. Maybe try it without the lime at 4.5 to 1. I think the lime makes it set too quick this time of year.

Still was getting a few cracks today. Think it might be the sand. U only have 5 minutes after u rule the s&c before you have to float it. Am going to try different sand tomorrow. Anyone have this problem before.

Is the sand washed? Could have clays and impurities in it that would speed up set times especially int sun. Some certain sands set a lot harder and/or quicker than others for sure.

Was told it was washed sand. Your right to it is setting a lot harder. Its got a nice finish tho. But setting to quick for large
areas

Any s&c work round my neck of the woods is a proper lottery when it comes to finding decent render quality sand.
Iv had bright orange ballast turn up before sold as washed.

Yes we had this before with the sand not being washed well enough, a very dark brown sand to much clay in it. Very frustrating!

I phoned up the guy i got the sand from. Am the 3rd lad this week to complain about it. So i don't have to pay for it. I used it today for floating. I soaked the walls down 3 times before i started to coat the walls. Finished up lovely :birras:

Getting the soakage under control is vital with sand and cement.I give the walls a good soaking the evening before and then it might take two or three the next day before it goes on.The mix must be used fresh as remixing plaster that's gone too far in the heat is inviting cracks. Also a while after the sand and cement is on and finished it's no harm to give it a fine mist spray with the hose.I would'nt touch sand and cement especially in the summer without a hose.

Old school way. I soaked the walls before I went home today.
