Just had a call from a guy, asking if I'd be interested in joining the local networking group.

approx £10 per week, meeting every Friday and currently 32 other trades and professionals in there, only 1 trades profession per group.

told me I could have exclusivity on plastering and rendering.

whats everyone's thoughts, anyone tried such a thing.

ta lads, MAC

Went with me mate to one. They normally meet at 6am for a couple of hours. The exclusivity isn't that exclusive if they've also got a builder there. You can't recommend your mates for jobs anymore, u have to recommend one of the secret squirrels. Don't know how good it is, some swear by it

Sounds like BNI £10 for the breakfast weekly!

£1000 for there annual fee!

Imagine sitting at a table with 32 "business" people promising the world to you then you sign up and nothing materialises..

You have to attend or find a stand in weekly or they can and will strike you off with no refund.

Very political an American just do a search for BNI reviews..

They will all say our group are laid back and really friendly not like the others you've heard of!!

At the end of the meeting you will get taken aside for the newbie sales patter to try and get you to sign up there and then.

You have to give a recommendation every week so expect a lot of time wasted following up on leads etc etc..

They all seem credible in there suits etc, until you delve a little deeper, 5 of the people I spoke to were not even trading!! You get a lot of start ups trying it to help build there client list..

Maybe try the chamber of commerce as I've heard that's not half as expensive or time consuming

its not like that im a bni member for a year now and had loads of good jobs. ive had 60 referrals in the past year. you go for breakfast and network. its no a must that you take a referral every week. but if you can its bonus. its worth a shot mate

If you want to recommend people you don't know carry On if you haven't got a website invest your money in that.

Yes I have checked there list and they do have a builder there who will probably have plastering splashed on his van above joinery and beneath tiling.

was very convincing on the phone but 6.45 every Friday morning is not my cup of tea, especially when working outdoors and its light.

stuart, that fella from scotland who did the unifinish video, does networking i think. he mentioned it in another thread and said it was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

they phoned me once. an estate agent it was, saying I'd be overwhelmed with work, which didn't sound great. plus i already get work off estate agents and letting agents and they are all wankers. when i looked into it you had to sign up ten other people that year yourself. so it was like a pyramid scheme kind of thing. if you didn't sign them up you lost your membership. but the numbers didnt work. exponentially before you knew it there would be about a thousand trades at the meeting :RpS_confused:

I'm in yellow pages and yell.com. I get at least 1 invitation a week from complete strangers who are going to be whole heartedly recommending me, expecting the same in return.

On the flip side, there were 2 well tidy birds at the meeting I went to, one had a cleaning firm and one did complimentary medicine. Everyone knows comp medicine is handjobs and I kinda had it in mind the cleaner bird could 'clean' me up afterwards

I did BNI for a year and i made abit money but not enough to make me pay another years membership. It does work but you need the right people in the group. Alot of financial businesses do well out of it, mortgage advisor, wealth management, accountant, solicitor etc...........its alot of effort for a hit or miss investment................IMO

Yeah I noticed that as well I got bits and pieces from it but whatever day it is that's half a days work fcked as well as £1000 a year, they expect you to have 1 2 1 as well..

Problem is there's a lot of trust need that they will retain you reputation along with theres, I've never felt I could trust them very clicky plus always felt they were snakes!

Yeah they are ok... I go to one on a friday afternoon... get a lot of work out of it if you are clever :D

I don't do clicky, never have and never will.

i don't like arse kissing, or blowing smoke up someone's arse for the sake of it, that's why I don't do much for builders.

i give anyone the respect they deserve if they are good at what they do but not just because they are paying into a group that I am also a member of.

I have a decent plumber I pass work onto and a decent sparky too.

I was a member for 3 years, you get out what you putr in, i earnt good wonger from my time there. Have`nt been a member for 3 years and still get work from a few contacts there.

Which proves the point they are passing it to a mate rather than the new spread at the meetings. :)

Wrong, spreads wont go, all think it doesnt work, i left because i was getting to much work and having to give it away, to fukwits who i couldnt rely on.
Theres never been another in the Bunch i used to belong to.

I'm not sure I like the sound of it,i know a good plumber and electrician that are not easy to come by,they both give me work and I give them work,I don't think I could give work away to someone if they're not up to the standard im used to.
