same here in ireland ,8 weeks in, he's no plasterer just starting off ,he would be slaughtered with the banter plasterering here is a 4 year apprenticeship ,calling himself a qualified plasterer he's leaving himself wide open for some serious banter .truth is it's cruel but theres not a plasterer in the land that didn't cop a slagging at some point ,in the buildings you need a very tough skin

We stuck a lab in a bosh full of water once and another time told him to get the bubble trowel out the bottom of the bosh he spent a good half his sleeves rolled up goin round n round with a stick trying to hook it until someone said they are havin you on mate !all part and parcel of it

What doesn't break you makes you stronger. He gave in too easy.
I hated the banter at first but in the end you see it's the stuff that gets you through the day. I had a spread who thought he was the b*ll***s and was untouchable. Until I hid some prawns in his pride and joy evo. He couldn't work out what the smell was for 2 weeks!! Pmsl he never tried anything after that

Thank you to those who replied. It's so good of you to have bothered especially at this time of year when everyone is so busy. Wayne is thirty six for whoever it was who asked that question and that was one of the reasons he was teased. He does not think of himself as the best plasterer that ever lived as some of the replies seem to suggest. He's not like that at all. He just wants a start in a proper trade before it gets too late in life. He realises he is just like an apprentice the bullying was just spiteful really. He can stand up for himself in any situation as well. He's what you would call a man's man always out with his mates. I think he left because when he told the supervisor and then evryone began to blank him it was like a perfect storm and it was just too much for him. Like some of you have said if he could work with an older plasterer and on a smaller site where nobody knows him that would probably be best. Could anyone give him start around the Manchester area? He's a really hard worker and would even do the fixer / labourer part if he could get his foot in the door. He just sits in his room most of the day now and he needs to do something quick.

One of the problems being on a 8 week course and being 36 is his wages. I had a seconhand apprentice last year who had only done 18 months on external wall insulation systems. I paid him £200 a week and he was fine on what is called 'bucket coat finishes' but on solid render he was useless.
He did not do £200's worth of work in a week and was not ashamed of getting paid more than he was worth. I put him on price and going on his previous output he would have been hard pushed to do £150's worth a week at the most. He quit on principle the first week. Although last week he asked for his job back and apoligised for not trying hard enouth before.
so for your lad he needs to be honest, work with a experienced spread and be prepared to be paid what he is worth which will not be a lot with his limited experience. The better and faster he gets the more he will get paid. But if he is going to work with experience spreads while he has still got a lot to learn then if he is getting experienced money that is going to cause grief.
Hope he gets a start but it is not going to be easy.

first of all Helen, not the best of starts when you describe your son as a qualified plasterer after an 8 week course,,.you might think some of the replies are a bit harsh but clearly he is not suited for site work, and I agree with them, but more seriously if your son is 36 and in his room all day , sounds like he is suffering from depression, if so get him to the doctors quick/soon as possible , depression is a very serious illness,

Some people are victims no matter what and he was. I did eventually find him a labourer that could accept him for who he was but talk about ungrateful! He did not see what lengths I was going to to make him happy. I laid him off one winter with everyone else and he took nark, left to work in a steel works where he got bullied and then suffered with depression. If he had stuck with me he would have been ok but he could not accept being laid off for 3 months of the year.
