I have an extension to do in plastic coating with a bark effect to match the existing. So I have the buckets of gunge which if Webers would be their High Build. We sprayed the extension 10 days ago in Weber ocr to a trowel flat finish, got it really tight. it was 15mm thick on 7 newton blocks. To be honest it still could be drying out but the trowel flat finish has made it two tone grey.

Anyhow the builder is pressing to have this job finished for Monday and told us to crack on. We got halfway through the wall and in places the gunge lifted off the smooth render. On trying to repair matters got worse so we gave up, cleaned and went. I rung up the manufacturers who seems to think it is surface moisture and with this product being solvent based it will not adhere to a moisture laden surface. They reckon the smoothness should not be a problem.

The other problem is the roller they supplied was a foam stipple roller? As I remember bark rollers had grooves cut out of them.

I have little experience with the plastic 'artex' type products so as anyone got any advice?

I have found this vid on youtube and the bark effect and it's roller can be seen 2:20 minutes in.

For heavier bark use a good quality medium pile paint roller. Not the stipple sponge roller with holes in.

Also kill the suction. I know a lad does actially give the walls a coat of masonry paint first over fresh render

I give it a tight coat of gear then use a paint roller frame with a piece of inch and half plastic waste pipe over the frame works a treat for high build an bark effect

Thanks for that advice John. Maybe give it a coat of waterproof pva or 1:1 sbr?

It is not that heavy a texture. I think I will get a plasterboard and a range of rollers, experiment a bit. Customer is right keen and the builder so far is first class so don't want to spoil a good job.

I have done loads of artex in the 80,s but rollers where widely available back then. I remember doing one with a roller in a plastic bag with different width elastic bands wrapped around it.

I know it's a different product but the best tool to get a bark pattern on Artex was a smooth plastic roller with different thickness elastic bands wrapped around it. Obviously no use for applying but a trowel is much quicker anyway.

Just one piece of pipe or a few with spaces in-between?

Similar to the plastic bag and elastic bands?

Sorry you mean 1 1/2 inch diameter pipe (40mm)? If I can get the right diameter frame? They differ a bit. If not how about gaffa tape wrapped around tight?

This be the same sort of roller that I put the elastic bands on.

we use a empty mastic tube pushed over a paint roller frame. for acrylic finishes you need to add a little water to the acrylic or the finish will be to pointed, with water added it will give a nice rounded finish to the pattern
