Do you get back to potential customers

Mac- Ask the customer to email you a picture of the work if possible, if they cant then get them to describe it best they can. Give them a rough idea of what you charge as a budget figure and explain if you are around the budget you are happy to come firm up a quote. You can get away with lots of timewasting this way.
If you do end up on a site visit you will have a good idea if you will be successful or not and just tell em u will ping the quote over and give them a call in a few days to check they had the quote and what are their thoughts.
Its a ballsy salesman tact that can be uncomfortable to do if you are not that way inclined, but it puts you in control.

I've used this a lot on smaller jobs. Does save time and money and cuts out the timewasters

interpersonal skills count for quite a bit. how you react with customers, put them at ease, don't talk down to them etc. you don't want to blind them with science. personally, i can mix with prince and pauper alike, no problem. i did have a slight problem last year when my jobs dropped away and my career was on the slide, but it was soon overcome.
 
If they want you they will call YOU. Never ring them up asking looks crap on you and then they tell there friends how they had a quote from you but you was phoning up nagging them,

100%, it's all about perceived professionalism, if you get two spreads, both of equal quality, but one has a brand new van, keeps in in top nick, and the other works out the back of a car.. although both will win jobs through word of mouth, the guy with the van will always win over more new customers than the guy driving the car, remember, half of running a business is convincing people to trust you, and then part with their hard earnt cash, so any way you can make this easier means you will always be that one step ahead of those who don't! I get a huge amount of my work through having a new sign written van, also have won jobs purely because its been kept clean, of which most plasterers couldn't give a ****.

Lets be honest, if someones paying out a few hundred quid a month purely on van finance, to run a vehicle that they wouldn't necessarily choose to buy, purely for their business, it kinda shows they take pride in their work, regardless of how good or **** they may actually be at their job! Remember.. most **** tradesmen don't actually know they are ****.
 
some of the shattest trades men iv met have the nicest vans and most the jobs i go to price dont come out the house to look at my van.
 
My customers don't tend to look outside when I knock on door to see what i drive, it's all about your work,
 
Its nothing to do with your work when it comes to a new customer that has found you through means other than word of mouth... its about convincing them that you are the right person for the job.. they havnt ever seen your work, having a convincing work vehicle is just giving you a helping hand at doing this in my opinion, that is all!

Most s##t tradesmen drive new vans because they think it will get them work and makes them look good, guess to make up for there cruddy workmanship I suppose

It could be on the top floor with the only water supply in the outside wash-house or shed.
With creamy coloured carpets over 3 flights of stairs. With picture rails. 2 pipe boxes, a couple of windows and walls that the punter says are 'OK' but are actually blown or still covered in wallpaper. With a radiator still on the wall........................ and a partridge in a pear tree :RpS_thumbup:

You're **** then basically and you're still trying to convince other people because you had to convince you're missus for hours to let you buy it

I think your wrong there mate , i have never judged a person on the van they drive , worked with guys that have cars worth £500 , "Lets be honest, if someones paying out a few hundred quid a month purely on van finance, to run a vehicle that they wouldn't necessarily choose to buy, purely for their business, it kinda shows "they are charging you that on top of the price

I always say I'm very busy and to get back to me as soon as possible or I might not be able to fit them in.
 
I know turning up in a car doesn't mean a thing about a blokes quality of work or his business etc but when I see a bloke in a Nissan micra with bags of ripped multi on the passenger seat. Beads sticking out the window. 20 4x3 on the roof and the back seat covered in buckets and his mrs bed sheets for dust sheets

all i ment was giving the price when you look at the job , so i would notice these tricky situations .... I dont price on the phone off random people , a 'rough price for me bedroom'
 
I think iv cracked if lads,

What I'm going to do is, get spunky to ring my potential customers and ask him to follow the quote up.
