Hi

any info would be appreciated as there website is full of praise but no website is gunna post bad publicity :)

thanks

Hiya,

Yes, I dont know of any courses that comes close to competing with goldtrowel...I know courses get a lot of stick on here but as long as you dont expect to leave there being a fully fledge plasterer then you will be ok.

I know a lot of very good plasterers who have started their learning at Gold Trowel :)

Also take a look at their marbling venetian course it brilliant :)

thanks danny :) i dont expect that but i guessing every little helps experience wise of why the plasterer should pick me over a school leaver so figured might be a good angle but gathering some thoughts on it first before as an unemployed man i justify paying out £1250 to the gf lol

ill definatly check that out thanks mate

I done their 5day course 7 years ago when i was an improver. Mainly to see what standard i was at. They were top blokes up there.very helpful and know their stuff

Hi mate i done the k rend up there. the guys there are brilliant you will be fine. and they have some good trowels to use lol. so money well spent mate. but when you finish look to go with an experienced plasterer in need of a labourer you will learn loads. but it will take time. as they need to get the job done rather then teach. but keep watch. and dont be scared to put first coats on. regards tony

Thanks appreciate the advice :) at the moment seems a good thing to do :) hopefully will find a plasterer soon too :)

i did the course 7 year ago and would recommend it, i couldnt call myself a plasterer after though as i lacked practice and conferdance which you can build your self with hard work

Hello everyone, im considering using gold trowel and doing the 6 week training, obviously I dont expect to be an expert after 6 weeks but id kind of hope that im proficient enough to tackle small jobs I do have a little experience from tackling my previous property and I dont think the end result was that bad but probably not a pros standard! Would I be right in thinking I would come away with a good knowledge and understanding and then just need loads of practice to get speed up?
Regards

What do you want to achieve and why are you doing the course?

If im honest, id like to retrain and leave the prison service. With a course of £2000 id like to think that it would teach me enough to skim a ceiling or a small. I appreciate platering is a bit of an art form but id hope that the basics are the same whether it takes you 2 hrs to do ceiling or an hour surely once you grasped the basics and the knowledge then its all down to time spent working with the materials? If it isnt then noone could possibly learn whether you watch someone as there labourer for months or get hands on straight away? You'd still be a novice even if youve been mixing muck for them for years?

Whats up with the prison service harry?. pretty secure job i would imagine (no pun intended). good wages/pension etc

Quick background of me, i left school and became a qualified mechanic, then went on to do engineering and then onto being a domestic appliance engineer and without sounding big headed have always been able to turn my hand to most things I brought my house ripped out the ceilings, partitioned walls plumbed central heating and replastered quite a bit I'm not going to deny my first wall was only good for lining paper but after a while I found I really enjoyed it and the finish wasn't that bad, hardly a polished finish but still good enough to paint. Unfortuantely a split with the ex meant losing the house and I found myself I the prison device where ive been for 9 years, don't get me wrong I used to love the job however the government seem to be ruining it with a complete change to the service with officer 2's ( kinds like PCSO's ) and there's no career prospects plus I work in the juvenile estate where all they want to do I stab each other and I'm a little fed up with rolling around the floor before 09:30 in the morning. I actively hate the job now and it impacts my home life! I have the chance of taking voluntary redundancy which would give me awage for a year and money to retrain and pay a few bills don't get me wrong throwing a £29000 job away isn't something I'm taking lightly.
Your right the pension and money are good but the home life is a little more important now days

You'd be silly getting into plastering earning that wage there comes a time where you might not like it aswell, that's after wasting 30-40 odd grand on lost income and courses
you could end up with nothing mate don't take it the wrong way

No offence taken I appreciate all input given. I am kinda swaying to sticking with the service but going part time which would still give me just over a £1000 a month then do something else on the side till I find my feet, are the trades really that hard out there st the moment??

Question for everyone!!! If you could all restart careers again what would you do??

Good luck to you mate for trying to change things in your life for the better !! its very hard out there for any plasterers at the moment with this recession so be aware !

What can we do?......there's no quick fix mate you start at the bottom and work up in any job, plasterer, plumber, sparky etc, construction industry's the same, go on a course pay you're 2 grand and then go out and compete against the young lads brought on because there cheap and the time served lads that are pricing tight and very good at there job

Appreciated and fully understood there's no quick fix, ideally id like to take the money and run then possibly labour for someone just to top the income up as my outgoings would half after paying a few bills. But even getting in with someone is hard ennough I'm 35 now and I'm sure most would rather take someone else on as an apprentice.

I'll swap jobs with you I've had enough of this shite I'd rather watch a young man having a wank just before he goes to sleep

HI Harry
i would go into the food industry, you know sandwich shop or something ,maybe mobile pig-roasts for party s/ functions ,you could always stay in you job and go-on a course and do it part time until things get better one day!

Ha, its not so much the wanking now mate its more watching them play helicopter when checking through the door flap

Cheers gooner, not bad ideas ill have to kick the misses out to do full time she can earn good money nursing and I can take it easy :)

My brother in law works as a prison officer and he seems to have loads of time off! Does long shifts then has long time off. He used to do loads of gardening on his time off, just grass cutting and tidying and made near enough a second income but he just cant be arsed anymore. Loads of opportunities round this way to build up a part time gardening business at £12 - £15 an hour do as much or a slittle as you like. Always somebody wanting something done it appears as I know several folk who do it and al busy. Why not stick where you are and do something in all your time off until you're proficient at it then look at leaving. Redundancy will be offered again I'm sure given the stories my bro in law tells me

Thanks for the response, I'm pretty sure what you said is right redundancy will be offered again before fair and sustainable comes in I do get a lot of time off and the possibilities are there to go family friendly hours or flexible rostering.. the other thoughts I had as I covered most tasks would be as a handy man maybe getting in with a few rental agents clearing and refurbing after tenants have left the property.
