Hey guys just thought i'd share my thoughts with you about what happening in the essex/herts area cheap jobs being done ???

I have been quoting jobs like 8x8 bedrooms all walls and ceilings and another bedroom 12x10 all walls and ceilings , they said to her the smaller room for 150 or both rooms for 290 , now i maybe wrong but isn't 290 cheap for 2 rooms or am i missing something here, are they 1 coating ?

Also a sitting room walls and ceilings 17x11 i lost out to a guy who done it for 280 me and a couple other guys quoted 380 customer went with the cheapest quote

Am i missing something here or are they 1 coating or just being really f'ing cheap or is that normal money what would you guys price them up for.

Any of you guys ever 1 coated i always do 2 , but am thinking about changing to 1 maybe if the customer wants a cheap job ?? i dunno i have never done 1, i know its not a nicer finish but im wondering what it would look like ???

Thanks for any responses in advance

i had never heard of so called 1 coat skim.until i read it on here.if you started with a decent plastering firm and done that you would not last 2 hours.

If you started with a decent firm did one coat and left a finish that is better then most I bet you would get a warmer welcome then that. If not they are just jealous and want rid of you quick coz your making them look bad.

Op if these are reskims then don't worry one coat will looks s**t. One coat is for decent New board work only in my opinion

i think 1 coating looks s**t over anything, i fell into that trap and you get more appreciation on site and domestics for 2 coating because it looks better.

luckily i gave myself a kick up the arse and went back to basics, got the spot board back out and started mixing a seperate batch to lay down with my work looks a lot better now. its easy to fall into because you shave about 1/2 hour off the gauge, but its not worth the tiger stripes and trowel marks that appear a couple of days later.

1 coating to me is laying down with same gear, theres a lot out there that do it. like said if your going to do a job, may aswell do it right

Two coats all the time do it right first time or not at all dont lower your self to the car wash boys i am sure spunky will get in on his thread

Just how much do you want for a day?280 is good.40 for materials do it on your own or with labourer.def two coat one coat for monkies.of course customer wants good price .150 for box room 150?again good half day even on your own!whats going on out yhere?your spreads not brain surgeons.

Sign of the times I am afraid, cuttin throats all over, stick to wot u know. I would get my balls kicked for 1 coat skim,1st coat, flatten, then fresh gear for a lay in,thats how I was tought to do it so I will stick with it.some people dont know what a good plastered wall is cause they have nothin to compare it to, I have lost jobs to (plasterers)! Cause they are cheaper, then had calls from the same customers mabye a year or so later to do a job cause the couldnt get hold of the cheap guy, then when they compare they relise the have been shafted, cheepest aint always best

i dont understand all this one coating with multi finish and how people get away with it ok it might look ok but it still aint done right !

be like a roofer doing a re-tile and not putting that felt stuff down first and saying its ok only needs one layer

'cant you 2 coat with the same gear then??'

yeah, but it looks s**t when your going at big walls and especially ceilings

i also realised you can get more on when you scratch on, flattern & lay down with fresh gear because the flatterning in part seals the scratch coat, then with fresh gear on top you get about 10-15 mins extra with which you can get the extra few m2 on.

guy i use to work with mixed 75ltr of gear up and layed down with it, i started mixing 2 seperate coats and using spot board, and i promise you all, you could see who had done every wall. he'd do the bottom off wall and i'd do tops on the high works and there was a definate difference.

You call it what you like mate, I call it experience

Every plasterer works different, just the way I do it. If its good for you then crack on.

What do you call a 'big wall' then? or a 'big ceiling' ?
To me a big wall or ceiling would be a hell of a lot more than one mix so I don't see your point :RpS_thumbup:

We use to mix 2 x 75 ltr buckets and lay down with the same gear 1 big ceiling or 2 or 3 small ceilings each lets 15m2 a piece, it just doesn't work for me, I prefer to take my time, not worry about getting in a flap over the gear setting, ruining buckets ect ect. I found the finish wasn't as good as I know I capable of, hence why I changed and went back to basics.

My finish is better iv noticed, other people have too, I'm not sayin I'm the best and this is how it's done, I'm sayin I'm better than I was and this for me, is why.
