80 boards a day

just read through this thread and me and my bro are in the same position prices are utter crap we are working on a site at tenbury at moment tacking is a pound a mtr dabbing is 1.50 and skim is 185 we are lucky to earn 300 a week each fed up with it after you take out your fuel n tax its not worth it worst i have ever known it in the 15 years ive been doing it even when i was an improver my wages were as good as they are now!! thinking of slinging the tools in bin these contractors should be forced into paying a decent price per mtr or if that doesnt work a set day rate for everyone ,the standard of work left suffers a lot aswell giving the trade a bad name is it ever going to end i think not

yes mate fed up of it the prices all around the midlands are crap i would earn more on a paper round! its not just the prices the materials they supply are for instance scrim that follows you around the room while your doing it and when i confronted the gaffer about it the reply i got was well it only costs us 70p a roll!!

i agree mate s**t prices plus s**t materials and unrealistic targets = rough shitty work and a lot of the time the spreads are good just have to make a living yet the site agent keeps banging on about no matter what you are paid job should be top notch im gonna knock his eye straight if he starts monday the nobba

y work at plastering if the money is that sh1t. f uck that am in ireland and i can make more then that.

i could mate but the problem being the moneys just as crap ive always enjoyed plastering and really dont want to jack it in and i dont fancy being stuck in some factory 8hrs a day would do my nut in buzzer for breakfast buzzer for dinner damn buzzer to have a dump no way

its all the same around here mate was working in gloucester over xmas prices no better there dont see why you should have to travel any further than 60 70 miles a day and thats one way because you aint any better off because of the fuel plus i dont want to be away from home for weeks on end was doin 125 miles a day and no better off

All the lads on here that are my age have been through a few recessions and things always got tight both in terms of quantity of work and prices, but this is the first time there's been a recession where the market is also flooded with cheaper foreign labour as well. I don't see prices ever going back to where they were a few (or more) years ago for the lads working on larger sites because as soon as there is more work available we'll just see more foreign labour to soak it up. Personally I think the only hope is for those that are capable (and that's not many in truth) of really high standards of work to target the jobs where, although important, price is not the overriding consideration in who gets the contract, and or get into specialised areas of the trade like Paul(warrior) or Owls etc.

That's bang on.

Sad but true.

We have been bummed remorselessly by past governments immigration policy.... they went in dry.

Dont get upset mate ime just talking fact, in London at the moment there has been a large influx of Irish workers arriving in the last year in a City that is over saturated with cheap labour, i know Irelands Fcuked and historicaly Irish have always come to England in search of work but now is not the time you wont make decent bucks here at the moment, be lucky to get a start.

What are the skimming prices like in London. Wages are normally better down there aren't they?

From what I've been told over the last few years prices are worse in London than the surrounding counties, all because of the saturation of cheap overseas labour.

totally agree with spunky. travel to get better rates. and look around more. along with what was said above about getting out of site work or diversifying.

im about an hour from you, and those rates are unheard of.

i dont understand what you mean by diversify i tack dab skim we do new work refurbs private work rendering float and set you name it the only thing we dont do is metal tracking or that jumbo studwork i dont see what else i could do to diversify anymore really on another note ive been ringing around some other companies out of the few i rang all the prices the same give or take a few pence and i mean a few like 5p theres a cockney lad just started for our firm yesterday and he says the rates are the same as anywhere hes tried in the last year around and hes been all around the midlands for work

diversify meaning mono, insulation systems, cornice, venetian etc. make yourself a bit out of the norm. you can charge more money then. everybody tacks dabs and skims. if u cant find better than 1.85m skimming your looking in the wrong places

well i wish someone would tell me where to look !!:) i was offered to learn mono by the firm i work for but ide have to pay 200 quid towards course 15 a meter is what you get for it ,honestly me and my bro last year burnt through evey plastering firms number we could find around here with the same result price wise the firm we work for are based in gloucester ,ive got mates in the trade spread over about 8 diff companies ranging from round here to hereford, shrewsbury, brum and their prices are near enough the same was thinking about trying to get into insurance work but not sure how to go about it

are they bad there aswell mate then you from that way? i just think its bad all over ive even had to cancel my tattoo sitting this month pissed me right off:RpS_cursing:

why should people tell you where to look,do it yourself.

and what course for mono for 200quid? and youve just said yourself youd get 15 quid a metre for mono instead of a few quid for skimming, so isnt that 200 quid worth paying.
