Just quick question, If I have to overboard an artex ceiling,

How do I find the joists from one side of the ceiling to the other?

Do you have to go the ceiling line, chop some out until I find a joist?

Thanks

smash holes with a hammer, when you find one you should easily find the next one at roughly a hammers width away, do both sides of the ceiling, pencil on the wall where they are and chalk line between the two for accuracy.

135 posts on a plastering forum and you dont know how to find joists in a ceiling you need to overboard ????????????? WTF
My lab learnt how to do that in the first 15 minutes of work, and can be trusted to do it on his own in any house within 1 weeks work.
The advice above is the best method although this only works if you use a Estwing hammer, wont work with another cheaper inferior hammer becuse they wont magneticaly home into the wooden joists but im sure you already know this!!

Magnetic Estwing? WTF!!! aI need to bin my B&Q cheapo and get one of these Estwings. lol Just when i thought i knew everything too!!

always 1 smart arse isnt there,

Yes mate i am smart.
Thats why if you look through all my 1300 + posts you will notice i very very rarely ask for help or advice becuse ive been ther got the T shirt.
And when i was learning my trade i didnt have a forum to go onto and learn how to do it !!!!!!!!!
Common sense and hard work is how i got on in life.
If you cant find ceiling joists and been to college with 3 years labouring experience behind you ,there is no hope for you.Jusat my opinion.

I never overboarded with my plasterer, he always overskimmed. But ya u never ask for advice with your 1300 posts then u must be special, lucky you... I am only starting off and if i want to ask a question, i will ... knowledge is power. Just because u are so experienced, have u forgotton what its like you knob

I thought thats what this forum is .... for help regardless if its been posted a 1000 times.

remember

Those who ask questions are fools for 5 mins
Those who dont ask questions are fools for ever -

this saying reminds me of u, u probably thought u knew it all and took u 20 years to catch on

to be fair spark, on some topics you act like a know it all and then you go and ask a very basic question. kind of contradicting yourself. not a dig, just an observation

Sometimes the simplest queries are the ones that have the simplest answer. But a little courtesy doesn't hurt for the hard of thinking! Chillax guys.

Confuscious says........Boy with hole in trouser pocket, feels cocky all day. Boy with two holes in trouser pocket, no feel two cocky!!! :RpS_blink:

I showed a labourer how to find joists with a hammer, left him in the room to have a go, when I looked in he had knocked holes the size of footballs in the ceiling and damaged the picture rail.

Needless to say he's history

sometimes the hammer method can be too dirty i put a drill bit in my cordless and push hard on ceiling if it goes thru quick and easy you aint found it yet wen you do do a few on either side so you can mark center and as stated do at at both sides of room and DO chalk line as its so much easier.

i also mix a little slurry of d+d just to add a little on the board just in case you do miss the hidden joist or it runs out

same as

Sparky....
dont get me wrong mate.im honestly not trying t put you or anyone else down.
But to me its abc stuff, finding joist in a standard ceiling is not rocket science and can be achived by anyone with no prior knowledge and a little common sense.
If you learnt on the job by a guy that only overskimmed ceilings for 3 years you obviousdly learnt the trade by the wrong guy becuse i overboard +10 to everyone i only skim and so do all the good spreads on here.
This is best practise, becuse if a ceiling is cracked and knacekerd or been covered with artex theres a reason behind that and adding more weight to an already f u ck ed ceiling is not the right answer, hence overboard it with screws fixings!!

Thanks skimmin2day, u see ... these are the answers im looking for.... im pleased with replies now especially your one about reason behind the artex in the first place

cheers

spark - im doing it now in my house, if you can, get up in the loft and use a pad saw - just push it through the old ceiling in a couple of spots along the trusses and then ping a line across when you come back down... if you cant do that, or its ground floor, you can either, as already said, whack a hole through till you find a joist or measure off of your nearest wall.. joists will normally start just off the wall and then be anywhere between 400-600 centres depending on the age of house... and "should" always span the room on the shortest distance i.e. rectangular rooms = joists running the same way as shortest wall, finding joists with a nail is fine but you run the small risk of either hitting a water pipe or cable.. its not uncommon to find they have cable clipped twin n earth along the joists... but given the depth of joists the chances of hitting a cable or water pipe are fairly slim unless whacking a 6" nail through up to the hilt...

Skimmin2day is spot on there, I only skim over artex now if it looks like it was put on last week i.e. perfect, had some nightmares with artex ,gone in thinking I will be driving home 4 hours later and ended up taking 2 days to sort it out, overboard almost all the time now and you can guarantee against any cracks coming back

you can never guarantee plaster won't crack, ever. you can do everything in your power to prevent them but thats it
