Dot and Dab - damp circles thoughts??

This is what I don’t understand in the building trade….the regs or best practice is not followed “because nobody does it that way”

Well why don’t you start and the rest will follow.
The problem is that it's difficult to compete with those cutting corners when the potential client doesn't understand or really care about the difference between doing the job correctly or to cut corners. You try explaining about correct quantities and placement of board adhesive and most people just glaze over. Luckily not all. Bottom line, it costs more in materials and time in application to do the job properly.

Builder prob been better off float n set walls with s&c dry quicker with heating and dehumidifier on , can see and check it drying then. Proper plastering !

I always work to the standards I’ve been taught, and the only time I change is when there’s an amendment to spec.
If anything I most often than not over engineer as prefer the belt and braces approach.
Folk that cut corners Dabbing will no doubt cut corners elsewhere.

Just tell 'em about the increased heating costs & how the sound of the neighbours will carry (or vice versa!) if they don't.

Not being funny mate, but I can't remember the last time we stuck boards up in a semi and most of our clients couldn't give a f**k about heating bills.

This evening I have just discovered that the builder has installed a cold roof rather than a warm roof that was on the quote he provided. A cold roof that hasn’t been constructed to regs and is not ventilated!

I’m starting to lose my patience now!!

I do hope that the foundations were checked and done correctly. I know of one house where all the steel was left out of the footings.
Daft thing is it was laid there on the ground ready to go.

Interesting, seems to be of interest around my neck of the woods, but more so recently since energy costs went up.

I'm wondering if he actually is a builder or just a con/thicko with no idea or knowledge. One of my relie's tried to be a property developer with absolutely no knowledge of construction or building whatsoever - gather he found out the hard way and now sells investments to punters as an IFA.

The plasterboard was removed today. It peeled off the wall like rolls of carpet. The plasterboard was just like wet cardboard. The dabs were all wet and the bricks sodden. Dehumidifier in drying out now .

Thanks for those with thoughts and advice.

A skilled tradesman is worth his weight in gold!!

Weight in gold? I’d be worth a fortune

Trouble is not many can float and set to an agreeable standard it’s all dot and dab now and when the house catches fire it will go up like a tinder box with all these dabs put on Willy nilly.
We did a float job on a full room just before Xmas.
It was a lot more pleasant to do than dabbing!
Yes definitely. Especially of someone else is mixing it .

The last floating that I done in sand and cement, they ordered ready mix with a retarder in the mix. The ready mix co. supplied plastic tubs about 4ft x 2 ft which the fork lift put on the loading bays.
It was very easy to use .

Floating doesnt give u value do wont be specked
