S&C render. How to prepare?

Hi, can someone help me as I can’t remember for the life of me what mix, how to prepare and what coat to use waterproofer.

When I was an apprentice I did loads of S&C render however after 16 years worth of internal work I can’t remember how to prime brick. I need to hack off poorly done render from a previous cowboy. It’s for a friend so I volunteered myself to do it. Once I’ve hacked the render off am I right in thinking:

Step 1) SBR Brick as a primer render when tacky????
Step 2) 4:1 sand/cement scratch (how much water proofer?
Step 3) 5:1 sand/cement float (waterproofer needed?)
Step 4) hope it stays on…

Am I right in thinking this is the correct option or have I missed something out? Also any tips would be hugely appreciated.

Thankyou

Weber ocr rubbed up looks identical to sand and cement once completed.
