The grants are quite good John. Call CITB and they’ll help you out. You might be able to make it work.

I’m 8 month in now with my apprentice mate he’s at college one day a week and works four days with me the grants have been none existent for me the college said £1500 was gonna be paid and they sent £500 tbh I’m kinda thinking sod the college and grants now and just gonna carry on as we are, if they come good with any payments then fair enough but I’ve learned that no one is bothered at all and they will try there hardest not to help you , he’s doing brilliant though at work tbh and I’m enjoying showing him stuff at work, the last few months I really tried to home in on skills with him as I want him doing stuff as fast as soon as he can

That’s a shame that Pete. My last apprentice was dealt with direct through the college and that was an absolute s**t show of a mess. They talked me into not using CITB and it was a big mistake. The first 3 apprentices I had were all managed by CITB and were brilliant at making sure everything slotted right into place.

What I think I did wrong mate was have my apprentice and then get him enrolled and try and sort funding rather than go to citb and say I want a lad who have you got , I know another dude who did the latter and he’s been given all the money from the grants I actually think they try not to give me any of the grants for as long as they possibly can hoping that folks just give up , I’m contacting hmrc now as my next port of call to see if they can guide me or advise me as to the best way to go from here ,
The apprentice said he hates college and just wants to come to work but I want him to do the full course as I think it will benefit him in future

Thanks @zombie mate he’s done good so far I hope he sticks the whole thing out a lot can change from now till he is 20 as we all know or remember (well maybe Essex Andy can’t remember that long ago but you know what I mean )

You’re dead right Pete. I didn’t get the final £2500 when my last apprentice qualified because the college was in such a mess. £2500 down over someone else’s cock up.

Part of going to college is to learn to stick it out, otherwise no quals and if they change the rules, no job.

Not sure if it's different in scotland but when I did my apprenticeship through citb (only timeserved 2 years) we did 14 weeks in our first year and 10 weeks in our second year, in 2 week college blocks then the rest on site. Then our 3rd and 4th year was all on site then a practical skills test at the end before gaining the qualification. My wages where paid by City and they where also given cash at the end of my apprenticeship.

By the time that I was 20 I had finished our 5 year apprenticeship. I was on the tape with a bonus system.

Health and safety as well everything has to be above board. I’d never take on an apprentice again after the hastle of it.

Accident book too @John j
This is where CITB will help though, they’ll show you what’s needed, they’ve got the best interests and safety of the young’n in mind.
