Hey guys, I started a 2 year apprenticeship with my local council in 2018, had a year out through being furloughed but managed to complete my nvq and college and get the full time position with the council. Overall my plastering is to a good standard but Im lacking rendering experience which I have rarely had chance to do!
I'm contemplating going self employed, maybe a year or two down the line. What would your advice be?

You’ve still got a lot to learn. I did an apprenticeship but I’d say it was 7 or 8 years before I thought of myself as a plasterer. My advice would be, do foreigners at the weekend and build up your reputation till you’ve got not only the confidence but more importantly the client base before you go on your own.

Come on Gary you know as well as I do that people nowadays want everything instantly. It's partly why the trade has gone to shite, skimming for ten minutes and then thinking they're a spread.

Highly unlikely you will get any rendering experience with the council they tend to sub contract that type of work out your best trying to jump in with some renderers on a weekend and see how it goes but like the previous Post nowhere near long enough in the game to be going at it on your own

You've also got to factor in a lot of housing associations or council plasterers arnt very good or if they are they soon develope the one coat/ that'll do mentality because of the expectations of the people who judge your work...a lotnof them will be multi skilled tilers, joiner etc...

Council workers are the poorest skill wise.they get told to do multiple jobs per day,I know of a guy who used to work there and got told a simple patch job should be in and out in under a hour

I remember I went to a view job on old victorian house Lime plastered woman had the council in to plaster 2 bedrooms they only thing the did correctly was put carpet protector down, property had the original dowell beads on every external they didn't even bother to rip them out or even try to bead over them they plastered over them lol the finish was shocking thru don't really have anyone to answer to so they don't care

You know all patch wankers.

@Cockney1 That true you get a hour a patch

also being self employed is very stressful, not a lot of people realise this
To me self employed was stressful. But ive changed the way I work take every week as it comes work by my self only get a hand when needed. And if people can't wait for you tell them to look somewher else. And be organised with a diary!
