My lord what a sack of spanners that was... needed 3 new doors and footwells

The engine was toast

The search continues

Land Rovers aren't vehicles, they're hobbies. People often cite the fact that they're easy to work on as a plus point. I'd rather have a vehicle which I have no idea how hard it is to work on as I've never had to.

I've had three series Land Rovers and a Defender over the years. From experience I can tell you that they are :-
Noisy.
Cold.
Cr4p to drive on a run.
Cramped.
Uncomfortable.
There is never a time when something doesn't need fixing, replacing or has fallen off.
Fuel consumption is the only thing they have in common with a Bentley.
And the rust, my fcuking god do they rust!

The only reason anyone should own a Land Rover is because you want to own a Land Rover. For any other reason/purpose there are way better alternatives.

For the last 7 years I have had "skip cars" I fold the seats down and destroy them, using them for all teh crap jobs and so seeing as our house purchase is nearly done a van would be handy for lugging a bit more shite about.

I bought a combo about 8 maybe 10 days ago and since then I have been fixing faults. It was a cheapo van and I expect to do repairs and what not but today while I was meant to be on a beach with my family I was underneath trying fix and I decided that I had bought a lemon.

But broken engine mounts, oil leaks, crank sensors, remote locking not working etc etc etc...

The garage claimed they had done a cambelt and after all the other stuff I did a bit of searching and from my opinion and the 3 other people who were there with me agreed the belt had not been changed. which is hard to prove and unless you physically see someone fitting a belt its hard otherwise.

I dont mind tinkering but literally all week I have been messing about.

The van was sold as seen but I was not standing for that and after a lot of arguing my money was returned... Thankfully the consumer rights act is on my side... They did try charging me 50p a mile which I was not having none of.

Anyway...

So my search for another van is on... but everything seems absolute garbage...

I try and avoid french...

Fords rot and the VW caddy has massive injector problems...

I don't actually need it for plastering and to be honest the only reason I use a van is for moving my bees about and home projects... I may do the odd job here or there etc but not enough to warrant spending huge amounts..

SO what do you drive and how reliable is it?
When buying a used van you either get a good 1 or a crap 1, unfortunately sounds like you have had bad luck. I got a cheap transit connect, brought it for £500 off a mate, spent about £600 getting it so I’m happy with it ( full service, minor bits and bobs getting sorted) now drives fine not had any issues.

I always check on RAC for reviews and pros/ cons, what to look out for when buying etc.

Always ask an aa man.... They now all the common faults....

Reminds me of the time I took a flight from Glasgow to Luton to look at “nice” Lada Niva 4x4. Pile of shite lol. Had to get the train home
WTF were you looking at a Lada Niva for, in the first place?!?!?!?!?

You went to look at a pile of shite and that's exactly what you found! :tanguero:

Do your research. The Niva was/is a great off roader. It was advertised as good condition when In reality it wasn’t even taxed and hadn’t turne a wheel in months let alone seen a carwash in a long time.

I’m going to go for a Ford transit lwb high top. But would begrudge 25-30k out the savings.

Even considering a loan as interest is so low.

I’ve got until September before the Iveco fails another MOT and costs a fortune

Best advice I could give you.. don’t use your own money. Too many good deals out there. Transit tops everything for our game.
