Just wondering if anyone here from Scotland has done much site work and how is it? I know its only really render and roughcasting for us as basically all internals are and taped and filled. In the 9 years since I left school I've always done refurbishment or domestic jobs but getting boring where I am working now and wouldn't mind trying something new.

you need to give you head a shake!
Domestic jobs are the best. instant payment, sometimes 2 or 3 times a week. on a site you will be stopped 20% tax that is 1 days work a week out of the window. lose all your contacts, waiting for money, working for low rate of pay. they will try to cheat you on the measurement, don't include reveals and narrow margins.

Totally understand that, I'm not self employed though, I've always worked books in. Basically the company I work for have went from doing full house refurbishments internal and external to more mantainance based, so can be a long day at times and I'm used to working at a good pace and should still be doing this at 25. The transition just isn't for me. As stupid as it sounds sitting in a van for 3/4 hours a day sometimes is ridiculous and obviously with the change of works the wages have been affected.

i do understand that it feels like a waste of life on permeant daywork just being there to 5 o clock is more important then what you produce.
i had this carry on when i was an apprentice, the plasterer that i worked with and my self would make our money up by working weekends and evenings in the summer months laying screeds for cash as builders/plasterers always had trouble finding screeders. i would go missing about 2 o clock to load the screed he would appear just after 5 we would have the screed down in about a hour and a half.

To be honest with you I had that luxury myself up until about 6 months ago when we got a new fleet of vans with trackers etc. Would get all my work out the way for dinnertime then move onto my own private stuff after but unfortunately thats now knocked on the head til evening's and weekend etc. I was more just wondering if anyone had any views on it up here as its probably the only type of work I've not done. I was fortunate enough to have an apprenticeship where I covered the majority of the trade and not just skimming.
