hi to everybody,

i was hoping to obtain some information from you guys as i have very little experience with plastering in any of its forms,
i have just had an issue with two walls ,these were boarded out with thermal plasterboard and then plastered however the finished surface is easily damaged, to the extent you can damage it without much effort with your finger nail the finished surface does not seem to be very durable compared with the other walls in the room that are block work with solid plastering, this to the touch in comparison is very hard ,is it normal for the finish on plasterboard to be so soft/easily damaged and what would have been the type of plaster that was used, any information regarding this would be really appreciated .

thanks and regards

Was the plasterer from outside the UK? Drywall taping is popular outside the UK, with just the taped joints skimmed, or a very thin coat of soft plaster applied over the entire boarded wall, and then sanded level. This is fast but nowhere near as robust as traditional UK-style plastering.

Many forum members will remember this thread, for example:

hi make it smooth
thanks for your post, no the tapes alone were not skimmed it was the entire wall , despite a couple of posts from the trolls my nails do not require cutting ,not being a plasterer and only being aware of a hard finish or taped and jointed plasterboard i was surprised by the finish being so soft and not really practical/hard wearing with kids running around the place, and wondered if this was a normal finish for plasterboard i am aware that it was only 1 coat i guess around 3mm as it just covered the scrim,

thanks again for your response appreciate the reply

hi wayners

the plaster used was pink and knocked up with water , once dried would this still be relatively soft to the touch? thanks for response
To much water.

Joking aside post some pics . How soon did you start running your nails down it

no pics joking aside i didnt run my nails down it it was knocked and this caused a slight dent i then just pressed it with my nail and this also marked it , it has dried out , it dried out in around 24 to 48 hours it wasnt to wet i watched them trowel it on the wall and it was also polished of , i dont think you polish of compound do you, or easy fill .....

Steady shirple. Banter here flows fast and free.

You'll have to have a sense of humour to get your answer
got bucket loads i can see why its so difficult to get hold of a plasterer these days , they have all turned into clowns and comedians and spend there time trolling on plastering forums pretending to no what there talking about , hows that for banter
