When we realised he had not removed the wallpaper (and it was definitely patterned wall paper not lining paper- I have photos of it before) we asked why they hadnt removed it this time and that this seemed wrong.

His response:
In your house you do not have wallpaper in the bedroom, you have lining paper that strengthens the walls against cracks because your walls are soft and are done on matting not brick or solid plasterboard. Once that was the technology for strengthening the walls, if the lining paper was to be removed it is highly likely the old plaster to come off with the paper, this will lead to complicating the job thus significantly higher price for plastering.

Because of the circumstance we have taken measures to fully strengthen the walls and ceiling with specialist hardwall (tougher than the normal one we use) and render mesh.

Prior to each operation we have prepared the walls with a specialist waterproof impregnator that does not allow the moisture to soak into the surfaces and additionally strengthens the walls and ceilings in depth. This is more than enough to strengthen all kinds of surfaces and prevents further problems such as cracking and softness of the surfaces.

Multi-finish plaster has been done on two coats to thicken and further strengthen the surface.

After completing the job cleaning of corners and imperfections is to be done immediately before painting by the tradesman who is to complete the paintwork. All processes to complete the job have been done to follow manufacturer specifications, this guarantees the quality of the work.

Until the plaster is fully dried the material does not allow any further corrections, as a result the painter has to do making good not the plasterer. This is because of the plaster drying time. Technologically any corrections for plaster are done after first mist coat with diluted paint (ratio 1:1) after paint is fully dried.

I hope we have been detailed enough in the information we are sending you.

As you have now found out, you have been bull shitted. They’ve spun you a good yarn though...and why would you know any different. TPF is not CAB so anyone who participateS on here is under no obligation to help you as they’re not getting paid etc blah blah. What you will get though is honesty, but it’s not always pretty.
Hope you can get some resolution

I couldn't of bullshitted that better mysen!

Lining paper that strengthens walls! a waterproof impregnation that also strengthens walls! If only we knew of this.
Me thinks Trading Standards might be interested in such technical innovations. It's one thing to overcharge but another to make up porky pies.

Maybe this is a new invention, maybe we don't need external render anymore and can just use lining paper instead for strength.

this sounds like complete bollix

the only purpose of lining paper is to be able to paint or wall paper on less than perfect walls in the hope that it covers up. It is just like a primer wall paper.

How did he establish this was 'matted'?

He mentioned 'specialist hardwall' - hardwall is speced for masonary background not 'matted' so a complete contradication.

"manufacturer specifications, this guarantees the quality of the work." I would ask who the manufacurer so that you can send this to them to check if they agree that it meets the manufacturer's specification/guarantee.
If he is unable to provide - then more evidence to trading standards of bullshitery. I find that Trading standards don't do much with sub par work but are often more interested in fraudulent claims and misleading/bullshit etc.

In addition to what others have already said (the bloke's a cowboy, he's taken liberties with you, and you should definitely drag him through small claims court), I would suggest you make absolutely no changes to the plasterwork until your claim is finished. You'll need the shoddy workmanship as evidence, in case an independent appraisal is needed, not just your own photographs of it.

Good luck with your claim, and please don't let him get away with this -

1) you deserve your money back
2) he deserves to get what's coming to him
3) you'll be doing other potential victims a favour by making him think twice before trying it again.

To be fair most people who come on here have a bad job done because they went with the absolute cheapest of the cheap and so get no sympathy.

You’ve done the opposite by putting your hand in your pocket wanting a decent job.

Don’t feel stupid. How were you to know? It’s not your profession.

Hope you find a resolution

for the record if you want any rendering done..I’m £700 a m2..and a whole van of mesh, ready to go at a drop of a hat...no need to ring about I’m on the trust a tardy thingy!!!...just you come here mate,I accept cash too...I’m good like that

I wondered if anyone here can recommend a plasterer in South East London please? We are at the stage of needing a report by a professional for the small claim procedure.

You've just seriously scared me. A flexible stick-on finish-on-a-roll is actually possible. Witness some of the European and US roofing materials, and they last.

A plasterers report will have no value in court ,@BG contact British gypsum for an assessor or get a chartered surveyor
