New build with lime plaster internals - can this be done over plasterboard?

Members online

Hi all, I am building a new house - blockwork internal walls. We want a lime or possibly even clay finish on the walls like in the attached picture.

My contractor tells me its fine to do this over dot and dab plasterboard rather than a wet build up. Can anyone confirm if thats the case or should we insist on wet build up?

if you are thinking of these materials for the aesthetic then a similar look can be achieved using dot n dab and gypsum finish.

Thanks all, its not just the aesthetic - our understanding is that the internal environment with lime and/or clay plaster is much nicer/humidity regulated.

So lime on dot and dab is to be avoided is it?

We once did a job where the ceilings were plasterboard with lime render over the top. All the render was french made premixed 25kg bags. One of the bags was for board prep, you gave it a good key and put under coat then top to finish. It was a real good system, can't remember what it was called.

You could use the linelite solo over plaster boards, but, using plasterboard not achieving your humidity, breathable option, not that it be problem in new cavity walls.

Use 9.5 board and lots of dabs
You'll get more " character "
Then use as board Addy and mf mix , as Raggles said , throw it on , smooth with Flexi plastic and finish with a wet sponge

I think this will come down to what you prefer yourself ..
I'm a bit old school so I would go with lime render/plaster but other will suggest pb cause it's easier ....(maybe they can't float wall either?)
Yeah, if pb wants it to look old, then lime the way, but expensive way to go on a new build.. but if that's what you want..

I'm sure someone on here can help with that, the wife bit that is. Builder is probably trying to dissuade you from your hearts desire because it will take ages to do, and he will have to pay someone who knows what to do, not a skimmer, and wants real money. He probably also thinks the humidity/breathability thing is bollx, and on a new build blockwork with plasterboard it probably is. But I've never liked plasterboard walls

Hi we often do this on period properties with no cavity as it has to be lime on these walls people often want the same finish on the ceiling which may be plasterboard. You need to tape the joints first then bond them leave this for a day to dry them prime the lot with dg27 primer you can then use a superfine or heritage lime putty on top. Not a easy job needs time to dry between coats and would only recommend some one with lime knowledge to do it. Hope this helps
