I work on sites on price mate and I’m sat at home, phoned all my contacts and they’re all saying everything is a few weeks away from kicking off, spoke to at least half a dozen lads in the same boat.

Been offered some dabbing mate but to be honest I’m too slow at it to make a wage and render wise I’ve only done sand and cement or sand and lime, need to get back ASAP as my livers taking a right kicking

Most important rule in being self employed is to bank your money and only pay yourself a low wage to live off and leave the rest to build up to carry over slower times.

Takes all the pressure off yourself and the need to work for pricks and poor rates, any tradesman thats not got a minimum of 6 months money away for a rainy day needs to look at themselves and how they operate imo.

I prefer it to skim we make more money and that's on average rates

Well you can come over to Coventry and put a shift or two in. You won't need your trowel just yet though. (y) ;)

How're you with putting RSJ's in or stripping roof tiles off? A little digging perhaps? OK, what about smashing fcuk out of some walls?

It's at a vets so you can stroke some puppies too.

Be like coming home! I was a builders labourer first!

I would of been quiet except for the BTL rip out and refit , doing small jobs in between, lost 2 flats to a cheaper guy , I know 3 spread that are quiet

It is sh1te when people let you down, but it's not just customers. Trades can be as unreliable. A plasterer has been promising to come over since November and price up a few hundred m2 of board/skim and some rendering. No sign of the fcuker yet though, just excuses.

Anyway, you still keeping busy @Vincey ? ;)

I do love the 6 months put by for a rainy day ... I’m owed near £4K , I’m always spending on the house , van , tools , a buffer zone I great but not always practical.

No I’m turning stuff away . Best January in years for me . It’s how it goes I suppose .

if we ever needed work in jan or feb there is always EWI work on council tower blocks. all scaffolded up with a roof and debris netting on the sides you can work through the winter.
if you don't fancy that then jan and early feb is very nice in Tenerife. just laze about for a few weeks .

This time of year if you haven't got money squirrelled away you have to be prepared to work for horrendous rates...plus all the customers who think they can get a deal come out of the woodwork.

Had a look at a couple of full houses...the prices others were charging were literally the same I pay my labourer...I couldn't f**king believe it...sh*t work as well.

Once the bottom feeders get busy that is the time to start making some decent money but it can be a wait and struggle...

I’ll definitely pop down this week was gonna come Saturday then remembered you guys only work Monday to Friday

It's almost always the same this time of year but as soon as the first Daffs make an appearance it will be all hands to the pump again. Don't fret the phone WILL start ringing again soon.

I really empathize with anyone who is quiet or gets let down this time of year, I've been there myself. I'm lucky enough that the past few years I haven't had a slack period, if it happens then you need to advertise/network/direct source etc
