any one on here know an apprentice plasterer seems a thing of the past

And before anyone says owt I would be tempted if I could do 5 days. . Just get picked up and dropped off. 8 till 4 with breaks 400 take home would do me

Did anybody actually choose to be a plasterer on here, my old man told me if you leaving school when you're 16 you'll be leaving home if you haven't got a job and ended up labouring to a gang who drank in the local never even thought about plastering before

yes i did.
when my brother and myself where kids, we had an empty shop which our grandfather had left to our family, this was our playroom. we would make plaster of paris moulds of ships etc and paint them.
when i was 15 a career officers caught hold of me at school and said as i would be leaving school soon what would i like to do ?
nobody had mentioned work before, and as i had enjoyed the plaster mould making i answered that i would like to be a plasterer. he answered that there is not much call for that now and i may have to become a bricklayer. he returned around a week later and told me that he had managed to get me a probation apprenticeship at the local medium size building contractors. i could leave school that day and get myself to the builders yard for 6 am in the morning. this was April 1963 and the only job i have ever had.
my brother got an apprenticeship with a local plastering contractor 2 years later, he is still on the tape sub contracting.

I was offered a job as apprentice jockey to a steeple chase stable when I used to do horse jumping but my mother made me go to work with an uncle that had a plastering buisness

most of the people who work with horses have to work for very little.

I wanted to be a bricklayer when I left school at 16 I jumped straight into a job in a foundry doing the sand moulds for the liquid metal to be poured in to make engine parts, after 12 months of that s**t i applied to a construction college for a bricklaying apprentiship I passed all the tests to be told were struggling to get apprenteships for bricklayers so couldn't offer me anything other than plastering which was the only other wet trade available I was out of work and 17 years old so thought f**k it,didn't have a f**k**g clue about plastering I just needed to be doing something and thankfully I took to it well and I was lucky enough to learn my trade from an old school plasterer who was a sound bloke and patient, and let me muck in straight away from the get go,personally apprenticeships are a good thing but for plastering its to hands on to be college based some of the best plasterers are the one's who don't have a single qualification to there name

I was born into it geez! (y) Grandad was a spread and so was my dad. We’re 3 generations of plasterers mate.

Yes, I did about a month in a plastic injection molding company and absolutely hated it. Went home and ask my old man if he could get me a start with someone on site. He was already working with one of his three plastering brothers so couldn't take me on himself, but did get me a start. Six months later he split with his brother and took me on.
He was a great spread, very highly regarded, but an absolutely useless business man. Never charged his worth and even from a young age this wound he right up. Fast forward some years and we had gone our own ways and he ended up working for me, on a price, and had never been happier. He actually started to struggle for things to moan about.

Yes I did, my old man got me a start with a gang working on the same site as him. It was either plastering or a blacksmith, being of weedy stature I chose plastering

Yeah, I have a son and a daughter but unfortunately my boy has no interest in the trade at all so I do believe the trade and all the wisdom will probably die with me. :(
Never . No one to pva the blocks. Lol.
I left school with no clue what I wanted to do and still have no idea but it defo wasn't plastering. Stuck withnit now so just carry on

Fancied being a joiner but they didn't have any vacancies at the careers office so got sent for an interview at a local builder that was looking for apprentices in brick laying an plastering. Got the job and the first day they said you're going with that guy who turned out to be a plasterer. I didn't know what it was and still don't.
