Hello all

Recently had damp proofing done throughout an old house. (1850s.) Taken back to bare wall, membrane placed and replastered. Now, about a month later I have green mould appearing in a few places.

I have contacted the company that undertook the work and am expecting a visit from them but would welcome any ideas on why this has occurred so I can be better informed when speaking to them?.

Looks like condensation, why has he membraned it? Membranes are designed for under ground application.... He has basically installed a vapour barrier on the cold side of the wall creating condensation......

Not sure if it is a membrane, here is a pic, looks like bubble wrap. So you reckon it looks like condensation?

Stick hit miss vent in the wall that condensation

A few mould patches throughout the house. The original pic is the location pictured in the bottom right hand corner of second image. Post the damp proofing.

Wall is an exterior solid wall (no cavity) - interior is living room, exterior is front of house.

There is an air vent on that wall to the left of the mould patch.

I've really had enough today and will try not to post anything ,, not getting into the builders approach, PART of problem could be gap under window board, sure its not the problem but wanted to throw it into the mix, main point is having a poke at perimeter sealing of bubble wrap not being adequate and the small cavity even if its fully against the back of the board allowing cold air to circulate , board gets cold ,,, mould etc etc , my fingers tired ,,,,,,,someone tell me I'm talking cr,p so I can stop typing .....

I see lots of damp companies advising on Facebook and 75% use membranes..... Its shocking and just goes to show they know nothing about damp.... They just think nowt will come through a sheet of plastic..... I used it on a couple of rentals at the request of the landlord as it was a quicker turn around.... Within 2 years the damp had tracked up the back, to the membrane off and it was piss wet on the back......

Is it solid walls no cavity? If so should be using lime for everything including paint
no Portland cement
Looks a bit late mate , don't disagree but people want to be warm , see a lot of thermal boards on solid with Addy , no probs

If they've studded and poorly packed cavity moisture runs down plastic and rots stud

PS please tell me about my last post , any comments cheers

Not something I've come across buddy, i would never out a gypsum product on a wall with a chemically injected dpc. I see lots of Facebook plastering firms dabing full rooms downstairs in old houses and just shake my head.......

yup

I lived near newport pagnell and went to wootton for school :d Went to Bedford college as well :D so yup know it quite well :D
Good town lived their for 10 y I liked the multi ethnic flavour , was in western st before and went up Queen's park to buy veg from the I****n shops , a lady used to give me a different veg to try and tell me how to cook it , its alright late at night if your 6' lol, used to smoke a lot of weed in them days and ended up on several occasions explaining that it was in their interest to put down the iron bar , mad , but I preferred it to Cambridge which I found less socially tolerant of ethnic sectors and the poor or uneducated

My guess is you have a leek coming through the window....

Not wrong their @algeeman drip bead of silicon on outside , always look for extremes hence the cold air circulation theory, especially as its got a vent nearby. ( uninsulated or poorly sealed to insulation gaps ) have you had much experience of bubble wrap , only once for me and thought this system should be totally sealed re post #9
@Danny anyone you know does this

Its sealed because its supposed to have batten on top ( prevent screw pop ) so theirs a gap anyway

yeah I like the architecture of bedford as there are some stunning properties but to be honest i was out on the lash with a mate on friday there and with all the gangs roaming about and the obscene amounts of attitude walking about I am in no rush to head back.

Some of the plastering in top end of castle road is the best I've ever seen , floated lime walls 75 y + puts cement in the dark ages , its mad this modern plastering , got bad reaction to lime instead of Feb leaving me scratching my head , can't recall any cracking or hollow, at least nobody's ever said lol , rendaid was mentioned the other day , got its uses I'm sure but just encourages bad practice , just like grit , never needed it , most of my posts are tongue in cheek but have a genuine point to make , guilty of encouraging the humour having a ball
