Poor Plasterwork

Hello. We've recently had some plastering done in a knock through lounge. The plasterer we used was friendly enough and the quote was reasonable and we asked him to go ahead with the work. He struggled on the day - a week last Monday - and did not finish until 8 30 at night and because my hubby had taken down the wall lights and the plasterer had not bought his work lights he finished the work in semi darkness. At the time it looked okay but when we went to paint it at the weekend three walls looked just about okay but the wall on which we had installed the new lights looked ghastly and was full of bumps and wavy lines. We asked him to come back and fair play to him he apologized on the phone and turned up this morning. He looked at the work and agreed it was unacceptable and explained that he had no lights and that the plaster was poor quality of late and had set too quickly. He then glued the wall and said he was going to the van to get his plastering tools. But when I went to see if he wanted a coffee ten minutes later there was no sign of him. I have tried phoning but the call goes directly to voicemail and he's obviously washed his hands of the matter. We are planning to take him to court and were hoping that someone who is time served could possibly write a letter to confirm that the work is poor quality? Or perhaps provide a few technical explanations as to why the work went wrong? Just to put in the court papers.

The photos make the wall appear silver when it's actually white. I think the glue has made it shiny and it does not work well with the camera on my mobile. Thanks Samantha

We paid six hundred for the four walls. Three of them are okayish but there are no lights shining on them. He did say that the lights are showing up what would normally not be noticeable, but even so. I can see what you mean in what would I claim? For one wall? Perhaps it's not worth the hassle when you look at it that way. But even so I still need to get this put right before Christmas which will be an extra cost.

if you paid him 1 penny then you over paid him.
the court option is a total waste of time, never take anyone to court unless you are sure that they have assets. you will just be throwing good money after bad. employ a proper plasterer and put this exercise down to an experience. if you want to make your self feel better go and give him the home visit.

Jesus Christ £600 for 4 walls . I do half a house for that. That work is shocking even though it has lights on it and overpriced

It's not always true tho. If you can secure a ccj against their name will make their life difficult if they don't argue with the small claims.
I had a customer who digged their heel in paying their last invoice, only 4k, solicitor said it will cost me 10k, 18months to recover the 4k on high court as they the sort of people plus the aggro. Plus take them to court again to recover my costs. Solicitor said the same, throwing good money after bad one.
I'm just waiting on the job before last of the year for to be paid only just under 3k if it's not paid I'm taking them to court and thinking to do the same with the 4k one too from earlier at the same time even if I be dead and 6ft under and in debt up to the top of my head. Sick of people making a living not paying

Ouch that’s really bad work. Where are you based Samantha?

Lights can be really unkind but that’s not the issue here.

600 wouldn’t be a terrible price for spot in work but seems this guy is an amateur. Can’t believe he came back and then buggered off!

for the sums of money that you are talking about you can take a high court writ against them, if the debt is not paid they will be declared bankrupt.

the op little job, is a one day job, and therefore not in the same amount money. so it would go to the small claims court, which is a dead loss.

It's less than 100quid for a small claims under 10k value

Nightmare. I got mugged once years back and took some c**t to small claims, well, tried too. I kept throwing money at it out of anger (didn’t actually care about the money so much, more the principal) and eventually they moved house and it all collapsed.

That’s the biggest problem as very often the chancers are doing house up to sell, so it’s prime time for some free work

Sorry. I've been watching MasterChef and getting the kids to bed. I'm from Willaston in Cheshire. Our plasterer was Mike from Neston. I don't really want to give a full name. I'm not sure what plaster he used. I think it was in a green bag. He put the empty sacks in our bin. He did not just plaster the walls for what we paid him. He had to build a small wall across the bottom of each opening with wood, as well, which took him a lot longer than he expected. It was already dark when he began to plaster. It must have been past four then. I don't think I'll take it further. I was just letting off steam really. It's soul destroying when you place your trust in someone and they let you down. But we didn't know a plasterer and none of our friends could recommend one. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Yeah there’s not much point pursuing through court but can understand your frustration. I’d have come taken a look but you’re 45mins from me.

Maybe someone off here could put it right for you? No one here would dare do a bad job, it would be to their eternal shame!

Horrendous job! A decent spread will put that right 4 walls is an easy day! I’d be finished before I even got in my van to drive to your house.
