Spoke to a few builders recently, they are saying big spike on cancellations on small works, extensions etc,,, they ain't seen this since last recession, putting done to un certainty on brexit, customer's holding off. I spoke about this a few months ago, it don't matter how busy you are in can turn in a flash. I'm also reading trades getting laid off.
This post is not a brexit in or out.
I'm busy but noticed large drop on enquiries.

Houses ain't shifting either.

my granddaughter is a solicitor who usually has 100 sales going through at one time. she tells me that she only has 45 sales this month.

my eldest son works in a 2 x1 plastering team that subs from the same developer all the time. the firm said poor sales are the reason that they laid off 12 bricklayers. with new sites placed on hold.

myself, i have noticed a slow down of enquires, my son who works with me has gone to France on a renovation for a while, i am working on my ceramic business which is covering my wage.
 
There's always something, weather, Brexit, elections, budget, Christmas, holiday season, mortgage availability etc etc

House sales always drop at this time of year, and given the bad press they've had lately it's no wonder the new build stuff is getting harder to shift.

Oddly at the moment I seem to be having more enquiries about high end (expensive) jobs which is good.
 
It was on the news yesterday how new builds are gonna fly up no matter of Brexit....probably housing association.

Pity the poor fcukers who're going to end up in them then. The ones they sell for a fortune are sh1te, can you imagine how bad the ones they rent out will be?
 
I've no idea how anyone can afford a new build. Some gone up near us. Nice but wanting 450 grand

I'm hearing that and first guys to feel bump are on sites or small builds not domestics.

Government making a fortune.
Soon as you get the house they get paid back first + their interest.

We're probably keeping half of Europe afloat....this is why there desperate for us to stay.
£ might drop but not for long.
Will effect the cuunts selling £350000 studio flats in London though.....about time aswell.

The majority of the stuff you hear about "the housing market" on the news actually means "the housing market inside the M25". It has nothing to do with what's going on in the rest of the country.

Some places are having it much worse, but many/most it's doing much better. All of the large growth areas are outside of London and have been for the last two years.

I think it was all a bullshit vote....the powers above seen the mass immigration in Europe and used it as an excuse to shut the gates.
The strain on NHS benefits housing etc was far too much of a problem we are already struggling to deal with.
We had enough cut backs without crippling ourselves anymore.

I know 2 selling agents, new builds, they are selling everything they have, but older properties ain't shifting been that way for months. If they are paying brickies off their is a big problem because a year ago they could not get any good ones on sites, so something is definitely going on.

Which perfectly illustrates the problem with talking about the housing market as if it's one big thing that operates the same way. It's the exact reverse of that in the Midlands, Coventry and Birmingham anyway. The older houses coming onto the market are getting snapped up, and the new builds are hanging and selling slowly.

1930's 3 bed semi up the road from me, reasonable condition, nice enough but nothing special, maybe update the kitchen type of work. It went up for sale with the local estate agents and was under offer the next day for full asking price of £300k.
 
Turn off the tv everything is fine!!!

Soon as we're told the sites slowing down there not selling....I ring head office and tell them I'm an investor and want to buy plots 90 to 100....get them built ASAP.
The greedy cuunts fire them up.
When I get to the ground floor of plot 100 I send an email saying Ive pulled out.
Keeps the boys busy for a few months .usually there's a few more sold by then lol.

They actually have a better spec bigger rooms aswell
 
Always have a seperate kitchen diner aswell

I was thinking more of the build quality and materials used. The new builds I have seen have been shocking. Soaking wet cheap timber, ties and services breaching the DPM/vapour barriers, fire stops that wouldn't etc etc. All they penny pinching on materials, and time pressures with rates that make corning cutting and rough work inevitable.

Pure greed from the developers as they could make a handsome profit and still build decent houses. :endesacuerdo:
 
I think there is an element of “wait and see”......if the general housing market takes a knock, a house becomes cheaper, more people will buy, demand goes up again and off we go......it’s ever been this, and no matter what happens with Brexit, we still need to house people.
 
Where are you based donzo? I'm north wilts/cotswolds and it's very busy. But as you say, like a switch, it can go deathly quiet. I'm not so worried now, I'm more worried about after/if we leave. EU net migration has gone in our favour since referendum, loads of site workers gone home which is why I feel it's been so busy, but if the economy takes a massive and prolonged hit , we could all be in the kak.

Glasgow, when old properties don't shift, no stuff for us, don't buy into Xmas is coming too many good guys I know defo seeing a downturn, may be a spike. Spoke to a developer last night he said he ain't doing anything until this brexit is sorted.

there are plenty sleeping on the streets in Colchester, a charity gives them free meals so that attracts dossers from other areas.
 
Recession doesn't seem to hit overskim work , and if people can't move they put an extension on if you can't do anything but skim boards your stuffed
Can't agree with that, I seen good spreads going under in last recession and they did overskim.
Enquirys were down big time. Last recession was the same we did not have enough construction workers then overnight boom thousands either left or were on dole.

the last recession we were subbing off O'connel who was the largest plastering contractor in uk. with a workforce of 200, they went bust. the only work that we could find was EWI in London and Netherlands.

Fair enough there is some really intelligent people on here that have great business sense and all these ideas etc
But fact is every single one of us is one week away from the dole
Deal with next week is all that matters
