Lath and unknown substance in plaster query

Hi.

Concerned amateur here, about to embark on needing to make good a hole in the ceiling... It appears to be plaster board over what I assume is lath and plaster. But the plaster has large black particles within it (pictures attached). What can this be? Is it usual to have aggregate in this layer of plaster? Could it be something more concerning, such as asbestos vermiculite suspended within it/is this a possibility?

Thanks in advance for you help.

Where is this your project is?

It's unlikely to find Asbestos in Lath but I'm no expert in that regard, always worth getting it checked if your that concerned but usually near fireplaces, kitchens, sheds/outhouses it's suspect as it's main use was for fire I think..
