We have problems with a damp basement. The previous owner had dot/ dabbed the walls and put ordinary plaster board up. I’ve, knocked of the old dot/dab stuff and going to stud the walls before putting up foil backed p,aster board.should this be ok.

Almost certainly not. Speak to a specialist contractor. I used to work for a crew that specialised in basements. They basically lined the whole thing in a plastic stiff and heat sealed it, then boarded and screeded it in. It was very thorough and pretty expensive.

Not all basements are damp personally I think tanking with plastic is overkill? You haven’t mentioned floor aco drains position of property these are all factors that have to be looked at .

His is.

I haven't recommended anything - I don't know enough to advise him or argue with you. I do know though, that a bunch of foil backed boards isn't going to stop damp from finding its way out through the floor and up the inside/front of the boards/through the fixings and kinds of other mischief.

Wasn’t suggesting your wrong stevieo ! I was only pointing out to the fella there’s a lot of questions to be asked . Should of replied to lad who posted questions first.

I have studded and vapour boarded a basement before but it was a surprisingly dry basement. I also backed the stud with dpc. I wouldn’t do this in every basement though.... I actually wouldn’t tackle every basement if I felt it exceeded me

Hi ,thanks for the reply ,re dpc presume you mean the plastic type sheeting? Did this go on the wall or on the battened side? Cheers John

Mate... honestly, don't go there.

Get a couple of solutions and quotes from them as know.

Yes and on the battens. But having not seen your basement I don’t want to say this is the best thing for you to do.

Jess that is bad practice im afraid to say it rots the wood and causes condenation on the face of the plaster.

Unless you mean breathable roofing felt?

In all honesty no I meant dpc but thanks for the heads up

Are we talling about an independant stud wall with a 50mm air gap infront of the wall?
There might as well have been considering how much I packed it out if I remember rightly. Sounds like I may have taken some iffy advice from someone I’m not likely to take advice from again
