Hi. Thirty years a master bricky and mason. Occasionally do some plastering but am not quick, know my limitations and take on nothing I can’t handle. Just put an extension on my home and am renovating the entire house. Plastered some of it myself but for larger ceilings and float and set I paid a spread to do it.

First two days his work was good. Third day he seemed to get slapdash. I’m not happy. Lumpy work, cracking beads and multi blowing off hardwall in places. He is now out the country. He has apologised and said he’ll fix all that is wrong when back but I want to get it done myself and pronto. I’ve got plumbers lined up for next week.

Pictures below. Can I rescue this, if so what is the best way. Or is it a hack off and completely redo job?

Hiya

Welcome along :D

The bead looks like it has been hit...

Smells fishy bead hit / plaster knocked off / base coat missing in the shape of a socket ? How’s this the spreads fault ..?

The biggest worry is the lack of visable key on the backing coat if its all float and set and not just an area thats been patched up and pva before being skim.

Thanks for replies. No bead wasn’t hit. Two other beads are like that.

No hardwall wasn’t cut out for a socket, I cut out where it had blown, that is only one small section, it is like that in many places. He should have skimmed that area but did not and it obviously dried too fast. Besides, what on earth kind of socket fits into holes like that? Also, where is the multi?

No, multi not knocked off, it blew off and I took the rest back with a wallpaper scraper to where it was solid. My concern is it will blow in other areas.

No, I do not want to wait for his return. I have plumbers and sparks lined up. I also no longer trust him.

Simply asking if I can patch/sand/full these areas or would be better ripping off entirely.

Nothing fishy, resent the accusation. This is bad work, some of the worst I’ve seen in thirty years of building. I’ve never had to use filler on my plastering and need loads for this. There are trowel marks, ripples, holes and flaws everywhere. As well as plaster blowing off walls.

Yes, he was rushing but not for a plane. He priced for four days, two consecutive weekends, cost a grand cash. When pricing he said if he rushed he might do it in three days, I told him to allow four days, take his time and do a good job. On the third day he said he didn’t want to work the final day and so would do a long day. He rushed, pulled a fast one, used only one coat of multi (which is apparent now it’s falling off) obviously did no prep, paid no attention to setting times and was out of there by 4pm. Stupid thing is he was on a very good price and could have got loads of future work from me. Instead he’s made a quick few hundred but ruined his reputation.

Yea, all areas shown are float and set. I am worried this will continue to blow a few months down the line.

From thr area shown its not looling good if that is how the backing coat has been keyed to accept the skim coat.

At a guess i would say it will all blow but given we cant see properly from the pictute would be advised to ask a local guy off hete to view.

But be prepared to have to start again and pay twice im afraid!

Some clumsy T***s tripped over that bead 100%
Thirty years a "Master Bricklayer and Mason" and you got a chancer to do your plastering?. Surly a man of your experience and qualifications would know at least one good spread .

Yes, I do, one was busy, another other injured, the other retired. I had seen this ones work before on a couple of occasions. It looked good. It now seems what he is good at is skimming on drywall and large areas. More fiddly and intricate work, or float and set, he doesn’t seem to have the patience for. Same for most brickies nowadays, they can run a line but ask for an axed arch and they’re useless.

I think I’ll just hack it all off do it myself. At least I’ll know it will be done right.

Thanks to those who tried to help. No time for those who wish to snide and knock, you do yourselves and the reputation of spreads no favours with that attitude.

Without brickies you wouldn’t have much to plaster, boy.

Came here looking for a bit of quick advice. Hoped there would be a couple of professional acting and knowledgeable people who could reply. Most replies have been anything but. Do you really think anyone reading would want to employ you the way some of you act? All it does is make people think “what an idiot, last thing I want is him in my home/site”.

All this thread has confirmed to me is that if you want something doing right, then do it yourself.

You already tried that and now you’re here?

If you want something doing right then pay the right person to do it, not a number you found on a public toilet wall.

That work is shite mate ....looks like he's plastered over dusty brick work and left the floating for ages came back and skimmed over dusty floating.
I staple my beads onto plasterboard and they wouldn't come off half way up the wall and that easy.
Is that skim you've painted onto it looks shocking .

What is wrong with you? Didn’t you read? Or is comprehension your problem? Go back, reread what I said. If you have any kind of intelligence you’ll realise how foolish you look in what you just wrote.

Once again, thank you to the couple who did try to give helpful advice.

Exactly my thoughts too, Algeeman.

Yes, it’s slim that’s had a couple of must coats. One coat and less than a mil thick in places.

Anyway, it’s off now. Will have it redone by this evening.

I was told many years ago that a bricklayer was just a plasterer with the brains knocked out........True story .:coffe:

As a moderator of the forum I choose my words wisely. But make no mistake about it I AM NOT afraid to use my powers.

I’ve been in a meeting with Nela this morning discussing our best approach at marketing the new corner trowel on the forum, so i did read your post but only vaguely.

What I read was that you built an extension on your house. You did some plastering yourself which was problem free, but the guy who does it for a livings plastering was s**t.

It all feels a bit anti-spread. especially how quick you was to rip into the trade and generalise the entire plastering community based on a few comments.

Plot twist. You did the plastering and wrote it off yourself. You hate how easy we make it look hence your frustration toward spreads.

Super plot twist. You’re that bellend stu crompton off YouTube.

What on earth are you talking about? The paranoia here is unreal.

I came looking for advice. Silly comments, accusations, bashing and insults I don’t tolerate.

You’ll note those who replied helpfully and politely I respond well to. Those who troll and snide I do not, and nobody should be expected to.

Now you, the moderator, make up completely bizarre accusations.

You are wrong, son, and making a complete fool of yourself.

You should have got the old man to float them walls Stu, he stood a better chance
