Is it possible to get a city and guilds certificate if you have been at it for years. Take a test or something.

Contact your local college and and you can do onsite assessment to prove your competent. If you haven't done an nvq before you will get it for free ( should)

I did same as Andy nvq3 was fully funded for over 30 year olds , tbf glad I did just to have something of kind of recognition, it might come in useful in older age, again like andy lol

Is nvq 3 the equivalent to a city in guilds? This is an interesting subject for me tbh I was never bothered about qualifications but have been more so lately

Why? You know you can do the job (I hope) what difference is a bit of paper? I started a college course years ago on solid but the tutor taught us fibrous instead because we knew solid, he was pissed off at how the CITB had split plastering into different sections

Yes true tbh I don’t know why just something I think about sometimes, without changing the thread subject direction I think it might be from being on bg plasterers scheme, within the group of plasterers its cropped up a fair few times over the last year or two that would it be better to have qualifications as a standard minimum for applying and passing application to the scheme, very touchy subject qualifications seems to be when it has been discussed within the group but as a leading bench mark setter within trade if I’m honest I think it would be an advantage to that scheme, especially how it is viewed by rest of the trade

How on earth can the BG scheme be considered any sort of "benchmark setter" when its only there for a bunch of reskimmers?
Absolute load of b*ll***s.

The Advanced Craft Plastering is classed as a training qualification now and NVQ’s are supposed to be the evidence of you doing the role on-site

Sorry andy mate I have to disagree quite strongly too as there is more guys on the scheme of 35 plus compared to under 30, even 50 plus age group has a very strong percentage on the scheme , a lot have very wide selection of parts of the trade they do , I’ve even be surprised myself by some of the work people have posted within the scheme , there’s a guy down south on it who posted up some outstanding fibrous work he does and and guy up Cumbria who covers all parts of commercial unit builds from footings to the final finish , that’s just two off the top of my head that definitely aren’t just skimmers , fair enough a lot of the plasterers are gonna be skimming on domestic market but also over the summer months there’s been some brilliant rendering work posted regularly too
Qualifications wise my point was it maybe would be of an advantage to the scheme to have them as a bench mark setter

Yeah to be fair I was maybe a bit harsh, but I can't get my head round the fact that the UK's leading (no contest) plaster manufacturer only aims its scheme at domestic spreads, which will be 99% reskims.
On the level 3 NVQ's you have to show that you've done 'complex internal and external work', what sort of examples did you use Pete? And that's a genuine question not any sort of dig.

To best of my recollection I was working on a total refurbished of an old water lock building everything went on at that building I also remember having to write out like schedule of working practices for the job to I think , something along those lines as 3 was more intense than 2 tbomk
