It’s that time of year again cold and damp working on a house that has just got ply over the front and back door . I’m thinking too much moisture soaked into plasterboards, first coat hanging greasy when flattened in, second coat after ages of waiting around for first coat to pick up, start trowelling and it starts striping like the second coat is just setting naturally but not pulling in to the wall, like moisture is coming through from behind the skim? Or it starts tearing aswell. After getting the spray bottle or wet brush to prevent tearing I’m effectively wetting down an already greasy wall, bloody nightmare had it numerous times before (normally this time of year) what’s going on and how to overcome it? After nearly four hours polish up with a plazzi to wipe off remaining moisture. Still got skimming from Monday that hasn’t dried out yet. Got loads of lights and I’m confident it will be ok when it finally dries but it’s a ball ache to achieve a decent finish.

Learn to 1 coat plaster board problem solved!

I’m thinking it’s below 5c in the room ? I’d invest in a proper blow heater tbh , if you are there for a while even if you go for one about £150 at least you’ll have better days
Forecast snow next week so it’s only gonna get colder mate

A warmer weather tight build would be preferable but the front and back door wide open to the elements and some of the windows only just gone in.

I’m open to ideas, why do you think the one coat sponge method would be better? What’s the theory mate?

No need to use a spongefloat!

Plasterboard is designed to accommodate skim why would or do you need to put a coat of plaster over it before putting a 2nd coat.

Cover beads and scrim then skim simple

These are good , don’t know how much they are though , maybe second hand eBay

Ever thought it might be the person and not anything else?
It’s all three of us getting it and I’ve had it before in a similar cold damp build, no problems with my domestic jobs just this one house. It’s the moisture coming through that made me twig.

We're even getting dark streaks in the current rubbish.
It looks like there's a line or a miss and yet there isn't, really slows you down keeping on checking things that just don't need looking at.
I know others don't rate them, but I find the Marshalltown felt brush to be worth its weight on this greasy crap.

Had a few lines that needed closer inspection aswell!! been dabbling with the brush on the plaster technique you spoke of , just let the bristles tickle the surface of the plaster (y) better than flicking water around and spraying.

I’ve never flicked or sprayed water at a wall I. 36 years , unless it was going offa bit lively

Well I can guarantee that the felt brush will be even better than a normal brush. You can run it in front of the trowel without putting hardly a drop of water on the wall/ceiling if need be or a nicely controlled amount of water if that works better.

Agree with Rossi here too speedskim it till it looks done and a quick trowel after , its only way to sort s**t gear, or conditions

Unfortunately there is only 4 clemoskims atm so speedy is your best bet

I’m trying to get away from all the bullshit and just use a trowel all the way. Now I’m thinking about felt brushes and speedskim I don’t want to buy anymore things o_O
