anybody using book a builder, just had a phone call for me to join at £699 plus vat, promising ten leads a month,is it another rip off !

Never even heard of it so can be very popular, I see 10 leads per day most days on mybuilder

Although you pay a tenner or so for each of them so only go for the ones that suit

Very busy site mate, run up to Xmas easily 20 per day all in a 20m radius, lots of lovely skim a room in a day jobs

Good for yourself....

though genuinely think it's sad that people don't talk to people Any more neighbours, family, friends etc to get recommendations!

Never heard of book a builder! Think the more of these sites start appearing the less the public will trust in. Word of mouth always best but have heard good things about my builder

I get lots of recommends now from it and lots of repeats but the internet is now the starting point if someone doesn't know any trades person they Google "plasterer in Mansfield" mybuilder comes up first on Google and my name pops up in their face when they click on it. It's the future fortunately/unfortunately (depending on how you view it) I do about 50% of my quotes sat in my lounge

I would avoid it personally they have some shocking reviews on the internet just google book a builder reviews. I’d rather check a trade it’s around the same price and you get loads of work from it if you keep up to date with your own reviews.

I joined trust a trader last may, three phone calls, one job,it was a good job so payed for subscription and into profit but still disapointing for about 900 quid think, gonna f**k it off when it runs out and give check a trade a go.

900 quid for just putting people together, it pisses me off all the different people leeching off trades men and why isn’t there a check a customer? You know the ones oh my job is so very important please be as quick as you can, then when you finish you here f**k all from them and have to chase for money that’s what pisses me off about domestics

A know mate its a lot of money, luckily it has payed for itself on that one job,not really sure if its that bad a thing as long as it turns a profit and you dont have the mindset That its gonna be your main source of work coz theres no f**k**g chance of that!

Hell would have to freeze over before I paid to get work. The fact there’s more of these company’s cropping up is a sad state of affairs.
These company’s can afford to push their sites to the top of google so it pushes the other tradesmen and their websites down the pecking order. Annoys me. Money grabbing middle men preying on desperation.

Did you pay for an advert in the paper back in the day, it's the same really, pay to have your van sign written, it's all buying business

I know what your saying Lodan but these people leech off your work, they are saying that unless you are on their books you are s**t and that is not right disgusting people

We'll have to agree to disagree...they're the equivalent of a dating website, introduce relevant people to each other

I don’t use it personally never even thought of it really but iv got no problem with it, fair play @Lodan its obviously working for you, is it more suited to 1 man bands or do you think a company of 5 would get owt from it? My hourly rate is fairly high because we work for a few councils big companies airports etc so gotta a lot of overheads

In a way the same could be said about middlemen in the building game,a suppose there will be plenty lads on here quite happy to take a subbie price per metre and turn up on site and ultimately paying someone else along the way.ot dosnt really matter which way you do it ,word of mouth, contacts, adverts or whatever as long as it works for you,i do a lot of subbing to bigger rendering firms alongside my own so know what its costing me to work for them

No mate would be no good for you, as you said is very suited to the 1 man band

I think Danny missed a trick when he didn't set one of these sites up a few years back

nah I thought about that and I have a few things in the pipeline. These sites need massive start up budget... that was not going to happen

Seen this the other day , tbh all the comments were similar

I feel for the poor sod tbf, personally I don’t care where someone gets there work but it’s the company’s taking the money off the trades that is the problem

I use my builder, but I cherry pick what I go for. I have a particular niche that I target and it works very well, one or two jobs a year and usually see £80k plus from those.

Advertising, I have taken a quarter page in the Building conservation directory (edition came out last week) for £750 a year. I have to go and see a job to quote on next week from it that'll be £70k plus.

The van is sign written, cost £240 four years ago. It saves £100 a year on insurance compared to not have sign writing, and looks a lot more professional.

Also get stuff from the web site, referrals, and repeat business too.

For all of the above it's essential that you work out what you want, and who you want it from. Only then can you advertise or promote yourself or your business in the right way.

Some sole traders will find that their particular circumstances mean all of the paid for advertising is a waste of money.

I find it amazing that some people make business/work decisions on a hunch without looking into things with an open mind. Especially when the outcomes can have five or six figure outcomes either way.

What sort of fee do my builder take for jobs at +80k?

£35 IIRC is the highest amount that they charge, usually for stuff like extensions.

I look at a job post, see (use Google Earth/maps) what area it's in. Then if it's in a high value area and it fits the other stuff I look for I offer to quote.

That's not bad considering they charge £7.50+ VAT for the chance to be shortlisted to quote for skimming a cupboard in Mrs Jones grotty flat.

Yeah, I guess their overheads mean they have to charge above a certain amount to make it worth doing?

The other thing to bear in mind with this and any other advertising/promotion costs is that they're 100% deductible. (y)
