Sheds... cheaper to buy or build?

Alright chaps

On a plot of land I have got it has a shed on it that is 10ft wide by 13ft long and has a pitch gable to 9ft its rickety and falling down and I need to replace it.

I cant build it out of anything other than timber as there is restricted planning on the shed (complicated)

The shed needs the gable end to have big doors to get a car through :D

I am looking at making a tounge and groove shed as I need it to be fair strong and secure I have looked online at sheds but they all look a bit pants and and nothing off the shelf works with my requirements...

What do you reckon just crack on and build or am i wasting time and money?

yeah £1600 and thats just with normal shed material not T&G :-(

Make your own SIPs (structural insulated panels) 19mm exterior grade ply glued to 75mm celotex glued to 12mm exterior grade OSB.

4" x 2" layed on the floor and fixed as uprights as you work along the wall. Each panel has the insulation 2" back from top and bottom of the ply edge and 1" from the sides. Sit the panel over the timber fixed to the floor and nail/screw to it. Drop in the upright, screw it to the base timber, same to the panel edge. Sit the next panel on etc etc.

The whole thing can be built off-site and it ends up as a very rigid structure, quick to assemble and well insulated.

If you know anybody in sheet metal fabrication, the pallets that they come on is good timber 3x3 long lengths to. Good for the frame.

Yeah the idea of insulation would be good :D I need to draw some plans up and get some procing :D

@vfr12 I have thought of pallets but not sure totally... I like the idea of T&G bit more expensive (ie not free) but feel it will last a bit longer :D

Materials for a 10m x 2.4m shed cost me just over 1500, for that I got 4x2 CLS and all ply to floor and clad it with. I have since clad it all with green box profile which I got a good deal on. The doors and windows for it came from renovation jobs so cost me nowt.

that is quite a big shed :D

NO windows in this one as I need it to be secure as best as I can :D

yep I think that is the case :D Nice winter project
Shame you can only have timber structure, metsec could be a good value and maintenance free option. If you need timber, ridgeons is one of the cheapest about, you can get factory seconds cladding off of eBay as well

Canvas. No-one would suspect you'd keep anything good in a tent!!

That is already happening :D got my coupe going in a carcoon over winter and the kit car in the shed which frees up one garage to build a trackcar or something over winter :D

Yup.... planning on developing the land in a few years time so want to keep the locals happy so a nice timber shed will look great :D

Build your own - more flexibility. A fencing company wanted £5k to do a horizontal fence for me - I built it myself, materials cost £1k....one weeks work on my own.

Shopped around e bay and got a good deal on timber, good size corner posts, 4x2 leg frame studs and clad it up, a few roofs to choose but sterling boards and fibre glass it is good.
I finished building one myself in my garden last month as a part time hobby over the last year to stash garden stuff on ground floor and a room n balcony for kids to use upstairs. Probably cost fifth of what it would if i got it from a company ? I slated a pitch roof with velux on it .

Where did you do your shopping mate? I bet the transport from Alaska wasn't cheap !

It was cheaper to get the loglap cladding up north east on e bay than locally down here even though theres trees everywhere here !
