Afternoon people,

I don't know about you lot but I have problems on my past two rendering jobs with cracking.
I am putting it down to the quality of the plastering sand, so I am tempted to try silver sand on my next job but I haven't tried it before. Am hopping some one will be able to give me some feed back on it?

Cheers.

Would never use sand and cement again pal after using polymer render base coats. It's the future

What's your mix with normal sand. In a belle mixer we go 15 sand,3 cement,1 lime all shovels and about 90mm-100mm waterproofer+plasticiser. Only ever used silver sand with white cement. Never scratch with silver sand iv been told...?

For the scratch coat I will comanly do a 8:2 plastering sand and cement with water proffer, and 10:2:1 sand, cement and lime for the top coat. I never used to have problems but the last two jobs I have done has sufferd a lot of cracking! And I can't afford for this to keep happening!

Sand in up and down the uk is very different and depends on where in the uk you are and which merchant you use ! To save this issue use a baged reader or speak to a local guy with experience ! As different finishes need different mixes
And different substrates may need different mixes also

Thanks all for your feed back, I will have to agree with the majority that bagged renders are far better than sand and cement! But I would like to give the silver sand ago on my next traditional smoth render job.

Was rendering today with silver sand unfortunately the labourer couldn't mix properly and the gear was utter s**t, complete ball ache. Bagged render definitely better for consistent mixes.

that is why we not have labourers, it is quicker, with a lot less mess to do it yourself.

I would have been better on my own, the mix was coming out too stiff and completely dead, I told the labourer I wasn't laying blocks, why do they always mix it up too stiff? I'm sick of it already I'm going back to my poxy little domestic jobs :frenetico:

the perfect mix for me is 4sand 1 cement 1 lime plus water proofer, perfect. when you can run your float up and down on the render without drag that's the perfect mix.
