Hi,

I'm currently a delivery driver and wanting a career change. I've got learning credits to use after leaving the military last October.

I'm looking at doing a 6 week city and guilds NVQ course to become a plasterer.

Would doing this course help me become a plasterer? I'm also trying to become a labourer for a plasterer to help gain vital experience.

Also whats the best way to "break" into the trade?

Thanks for any help

If your sure you want to go dow the plastering root its good to go on. You will learn a few basics on there. Try to line up some labouring for a spread whilst your on it to run in conjunction with it or after it. You may leave the course with a qual but that doesnt mean our are. Some trowel and handboard skills will be picked up and materials knowledge thats about it. Just a tip make sure you want this and dont blow your credits on something you are only half hearted about use them wisely to step on to the next career of your life. My lad used his on a H&S course and regretted it from day one.

Welcome to the forum

Plastering is a hard game and can be challenging There are easier ways to earn a living.

@Lodan made the break and has not looked back and a quite a few on here have done the same and carved a great living out from the profession of waving at walls :D

I did 6 weeks at Goldtrowel and it helped, I was lucky enough that one of the chaps off this forum took me out for a few months to give me some real world experience.....the course at Goldtrowel was good but probably not enough on its own.

Just be aware its a hard game mate (a lot harder than I expected ) but I do love it and would do the same again if had the choice a second time

Please for the love of god don't waste your time and money on becoming a plasterer!!!

It will age your body and wreck you!

Become a plumber or electrician earn double the money and go home and wake up everyday without feeling like you've been beat up!

Amen to that brother!
They don't make the wire, nor the pipes.......even on the most complicated jobs they have plans, drawings, instructions.....

We have to work magic......adding just the right amount of water to crushed rock......mixing it for just the right amount of time.....then applying at just the right thickness to allow it to be trowelled to perfection with a bit of metal or plastic with a crude handle.......working the resulting coat of liquid rock as it sets to a flat finish ready for another trade.

Plastering is a hard game but I still enjoy my job even after 30 years. Everybody is different. If I was told to be a plumber or a spark I'd be like f**k that s**t. Believe it or not some of us enjoy our trade. If I hated plastering I'd f**k it off and work at Aldi or B&Q and try and f**k my milf work colleagues........ hang on might just get a couple of application forms ;)

Yeah most ones I work with think I'm mad for I enjoy it. Obviously we all have bad days or s**t jobs that do our nuts, but I on the whole like it. Couldn't picture myself doing anything else.

Were abouts are you .
As I'm looking for some keen

Apprenticeship lasts a lifetime, don't give up When you have a bad day just remember everyone else has to pay to go to the gym

Was the rest of that post for real ,couldn't get over the quality and price , I give my customers 2 options...
1 scrape , PVA 4:1 , PVA 2:1 , skim 2 or 3 coats MF ( assuming no bonding )
2 scrape , PVA 4:1 , PVA 2:1 skim 1 or 2 coats MF then return in 2/3 days PVA 4:1 , PVA 2:1 , 2 coats MF.
It depends on the conditions , the choice is there's , a 25 m2 ceiling would cost them about £100 or £130 for option 2
No wonder I don't go on posh holidays , that spread ( not ) charging that much lives in another world
