London tower block fire

Seen it this morning coming in to the city from as far as Highgate.
Some renderers on fb say the ewi didn't help matters either

They said it on the radio not long ago that a fridge exploded on the 1st floor, must have been a bloody big fridge
what were they packing. bloody bangers sausages...
it said residents said it was unsafe 4 yrs ago. no alarms or sprinklers. horrible

Awful. Some heart wrenching stories.People being told by the fire brigade to stay in their rooms and put a wet towel along the bottom of the door. Im not blaming the fire brigade. Some of them will have to live with giving that advice for the rest of their lives. Heard a few of them on LBC today bemoaning that they just dont have the resources. People jumping from windows. Unbelievable. And all avoidable. Thats the worst of it. There will be an enquiry. But nothing will ever come of it.

You are a very sick man

If it got recently fit out, they'll be a few gaffers of building outfits that had subbies on it having sleepless nights. Any corners cut with anything they'll be on a corporate manslaughter charge.

It's nothing to do with a Tory minister,
It got refurbed a year ago everything would have had to have been up to scratch to meet building regs, we have some of the most stringent building regs in the world, everything would have been up to standard, as with every other high rise building of that age around the country.
Things like sprinkler systems would have been advised if not Inforced to the landlords if it's a private building, we work on multi rise buildings rendering the outsides.
Political point scoring is just daft and not called for.

It's the fireman that are heros, £600 quid a week for dealing with that, we earn more pushing plaster or render up walls.

Its everything to do with a tory minister. He sat on a report that recommended they update the building regs as tower blocks like grenfall house were vulnerable to fire. Its a report that has never been acted upon. A report that was undertaken after the last tower block tragedy. Read the article before you make your sweeping judgements. Tit

I cannot imagine what the people in that building must have gone through. Jump........or.......burn .............is not much of a choice.

Political point scoring. Really?

Yes really, you are sick individual. People have died today, lost there homes and treasured possessions.
We don't know how or why the fire started or spread so quick, and your just spouting utter rubbish. Sicko

Did they act on the reports recommendations?

Any fire I've seen high rise flats round my way always seems to be contained to one level or couple of flats on a level?...
But what I seen of that one today it was burning like it was made out of cardboard and wood?...
Thought most tower blocks were of concrete construction?.... As owls said there will be a few people sleepless tonight.:(

Think it's already been said, but wasn't it refurbed and covered in ewi? Perhaps that stuff isn't flame retardant enough. Tragic turn of events. A baby thrown to safety, but what about mum? Doesn't bear thinking about.

All the shite we spout on here about this and that...............puts things into perspective.

It's not political points scoring sounds more like your jumping to their defence, the place wasn't safe that's obvious and anyone living in similar will be shitting it. Obviously a case of no solid dabs but externally without the dabs, someone has took a short cut guaranteed and some one probably on a price. Seen it years ago my mate single skinning all the cupboard ceilings and I warmed him about a fire, there Wes a leak above one which brought it on top for him but lucky for him it was before they were finished.

Tit... I can live with, I've been called worse. I'm making sweeping judgements ...coming from you on here. I can't be bothered getting in some daft left wing right wing what ever wing you are with it argument, so I'll say no more on it. All I've read it as, is a terrible tragedy and your first post up about is refering it up to a Tory minister, I just think it's in poor taste.

I'm not jumping to anyone's defence, I'm mearly stating it from a building regs point of view, that was my only point.it was a 10 million refurb that would have been signed off at every stage by building control, fire control etc etc.id just like the facts to play out before media or individuals jump in blaming this and that.

Fair point, being in this game we all know there was a massive problem construction wise. I had an accident many years ago on a development of about 30 apartments, I was friends with the building inspector or in this case a member of a certain organisation who sign off most of the new builds. I asked him about the specific flat I had an accident in (I went through a floor that wasn't done properly) and had he passed it. His answer shocked me at the time and it was we don't check every flat we check one and treat the building as one i.e. Exit in and exit out.

They are now questioning the insulation on the new cladding which is a good point , not saying it started the fire but look how it spread , how fire resistant is some of these new external insulations ?

I would say it was left out in parts causing the fire to travel quicker, the system must be fire safe (unless someone has been shopping in china for a similar product) so I recon short cuts.

Saw this this morning and it doesnt bear thinking about...

People on social media were saying that there were no fire/smoke alarms and people were going from room to room alerting neighbours... I did not realise it was a new build/renovation.... from the news stories I figure it was run down and needing renovation

They tarted the outside up to please the more well off residents that surround it, f**k the inside, someone is gonna pay big time.

As @flynnyman rightly pointed out, on large sites for new build or refurbs they aren't checked by building control. The site will have a representative who is employed by, or contracted to, the main contractor. They will carry out visual sampling inspections.

Anyone who's worked on large sites will have seen the sort of stuff that goes on. For example, any ducts, pipes or cables that travel between floors is supposed to have fire glands. But they're expensive and take time to fit. So they're sometimes only fitted where the inspector can see and left out elsewhere. If there is a fire like this and someone is sought to take the blame then there will be a run around and ultimately no one will actually get pinned down.

Wall ties in the recent Scottish school new builds for example. No one is taking the blame, and the local authorities are paying to put right work they paid for originally. That work was 'inspected' and signed off as meeting the standards.

They will look to share the blame and that will ultimately end up with a subby taking a share, they will just want to share one percent and that is their way of getting out of full responsibility.
