labourers are a thing of the past for most of us. why would any one waste the time and money to train you up ?. you should have thought about that 10 years ago.

Ive been the same job for the last 9 years and want a change what is so bad about that i was asking for advice not for negative feedback if you cant help then dont bother saying anything at all. Im not asking anyone to spend money on me i will even go down the route of going on courses. Only trying to find more information out but thanks for the reply

He just told you the truth mate.

Why plastering it's hard dirty work. Then when rendering u are out in the cold weather conditions are s**t most of the time. If you don't mind me asking how did you get the idea of I'll see if I can become a plasterer. U are 26 now so you will be 30 b4 u are able to do most stuff to a high standard.

Time and again people think yeah plastering I wanna bit of that hear tales of big money gone by 3pm but the reality is very different, not many companies have time or resources to train people up and if a one man band is busy maybe just maybe your get a few solid months then nothing when it's quiet, then becomes the issue of wages, would u except 50 a day less 20% tax at 26? I started on 20 a day at 15 and took me a while to get a pay rise, taking someone on that hasn't got a clue is just an arse ache really, even basics like scrimming up getting water mixing to right consistency plasterboard, then getting outside and doing rendering I've had apprentices with me who swear blind they have put waterproofed in mix when I full well know they haven't, this is not to put you off it's just the reality that plastering takes years to get right and even then you get the odd f up

Good luck trying to find something

I think what malc is trying to say is you will struggle to find a start ,with the whisk most plasterers very rarely need a labourer so in saying that why would you pay someone you don't really need ? spend time training them(you) up ,for you to turn round and leave and become another person to price against in the future , there is a few reasons that there's not enough apprentices but this is one reason , good luck with your search and be prepared for s**t wages and hard graft for at least three years plus

I can understand where you are coming from. But plastering internal and external is a lot to learn. Or is it just skimming u want to do?. Plus plastering is going down hill as a trade i was making more money 13 years ago then I am now. @Lodan from the forum did a plastering course he would be able to advise you more then me as he does skimming and plasterboarding. I do everything in the trade and still run out of work every now and again. But don't mind as I hate working.

Where did you get the idea of plastering

No real advice from me, a 6 week course is what I did, but I had decent money behind me to start up and its still been so stressful to get through the first year its made my head spin at times....i wouldnt recommend or not reccommend a course just do what you think is best but you'll need some staying power....even on the course they told me most dont make it

And I had some back up, without pete at the end of the phone think I might have jacked it in the first couple of months

I started plastering quite late in life, probably about your age, i did a course about 13years ago and im still learning, i spent about a year working with a couple of spreads, then started taking on small jobs and building up from there. Like the more experienced guys on here say its hard dirty work, there are other trades you could go for, I've just spent the last two years at college studying carpentry, bit less demanding on the body and the timber doesn't dry so quickly! If you really want to do it then go for it, but heed the advice of the guys on here.

I would ring around local firms, and like you say start from the bottom labouring and put yourself through college and go from there.

Wow, I came on here to get some advice for a DIY project (actually doing a job for family) but after reading this thread, f**k that. I can't believe I read that 26 is late or too late in life to get into ANYTHING. I just went back to school and graduated at the top of my class at 36 in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science. You guys act it is too late. Do whatever you want man, ain't nothing that is too late. Especially plastering. Go watch some videos and take a course if you need to, no helpful advice here.

Don't get too high and mighty mate ..I thought the lads went to great pains to explain the process he needed to go thru and the pros and cons of the game..just the hard truth really..And yes its Never too late to attempt something else...but its helpful to have the experience of others in mind when taking the leap...
