The last one I priced for a builder I got "Ohhh (sucking through teeth) I've only allowed £X for it can you do it for that"

When that shite starts and they're low ball pricing your work for you that's the point of no return.

It's always the same story like that as you say. But eventually someone comes along and will do it on stupid rates

Would rather work for Granny Smith any day :bailando: of the week, rather than any builder type Prick :bananahappy:

Stuff um
Don't need um, never have never will !

Work direct only me , if they want a price they can suck my cosh ,idiots

Disagree there. May be an geographical thing but 90% of our external work is mono and 80% of that work is to average homeowners. Has been like this for last 3 years hence why I bought the machine.

I agree with that,
It's a high percentage of mono we do, I think we've done around 8000 metres this year and around 300 metres of sand cement. I don't agree with what someone said about most domestic wantbit cheap and cheerful, most we find want to spend on quality in there own house and if they don't im not interested, same with builders,if they want it cheap we're not for them.
I never have set meterage rate, every job on it merits.

The issue is anyone can call them self a 'builder' these days,so there's a good share of multi trade jobbers around doing two bit bodging, get with a good established builder/developer and look after them i.e. Keep to scheduals, produce that quality go that extra yard, and in the most they'll look after you. It's in there interest to have a reliable render outfit they can call upon, to produce quality workmanship who they trust.

I've worked for builders who are decent at the beginning - no problem price is the price but after the first few jobs they learn how much we can earn and they don't like it - they get greedy and want a piece of that pie for themselves. I've found that on a good few occasions personally.

This thread hasn't half derailed!

small to medium builders just want you to work hard and only take home a wage. QS are always trying to work out your earnings and put a ceiling on it.
the large contractor does not have the same grip on money they just want the job done.

I must be awfully lucky. Only ever had a couple of twatty builders. All mine even stuck with me after a few long breaks.

Around our way Pug I think small builders are happy to pay good money for a tidy reliable spread . I got chased down the road by a builder earlier this year trying to get me to do his work . I pissed myself when he said "next week".

I have been lucky with the builders I worked for before... like pug they still call me now to see if I want work and I was no means cheap... If I am dragging my sorry arse out of bed it better be worth it :D

it is faster by hand, by he time they have covered up , battle through a scaffold, got a load of wet material on the wall and wondering if it will ever set. we have finished and on the way home. we are plasterers not machine minders.
the only machine we use is a screed pump which is the bees knees and can pump 8 floors up or a quarter of a mile.

Your dreaming malc.

Most people would shy away from modern systems of render purely for the cost . we live in Salford Manchester so for example . tidy up the cable of an end terrace in k.rend or Wetherby the cost is astronomical . builders and home owners alike want cheap n cheerful . them modern renders are for site work men like us . not your average homeowners
all of my work is domestic and it's all been krend or mono but that down south where the sunshines everyday

1 of builders we have dropped used to be great started off can I have a price then went to can u do this it will take a gud day..nah mate we will tell u how long it takes so havnt done his work for a while but he still rings me 1st everytime to see if we can do jobs..

Once you've used a machine your never hand ball again . Doesn't matter if it's 10m2 or 100m2 it makes life a hole lot easier .

It's the same thing all the time.
I can lay this much, we can finish this quicker etc etc.
The way I see it is my body will have a lot less strain on it and I'll hopefully be in better condition come retirement.
I always look at how good I can do a job not how quick.
Quality over quantity every day.

If you can do loads by hand to a good standard then all the best to you but no ones gonna be giving you a pat on the back when your arms, knees, shoulder etc is in pieces.

All I know is I gonna move to Sheffield, must be a goldmine up there for renderers, mono is £80/m supplied and fitted been told.

And it's not quicker dan
Maybe under 10-20m2 yes
You'd have to tape the windows up anyhow so a bit of extra masking yes
Mixing mono in a belle mixer then into a wheelbarrow then waiting for the numpty labourer to carry it up the ladder and onto the board!!
No thanks

Mono isn't really more expensive than sand and cement if you are going to paint it. It's cheaper and quicker mono. I'd put sand and cement on my house tho

the same method that we use.

So how does getting all those bags up to each lift along with the water, power drill, tools etc equate to being quicker than having it all on the ground and setting the machine up?

Come on let's be real if we're going to debate here.

If you can lay quicker than a machine if happily pay you the rates you wanted and it would save me buying a machine but truthfully that's not the case is it?

There quicker end of. It's just me and my lad doing it and we roughly do 35/40 bags a day . When I was hand balling it, my max was 20bags so it's a no brainier .

We have 2 different machines and if it's a one off job under 20m2 we will hand ball usually as its quicker, you have to consider the time and effort it takes to get all that machine gear on the van.
