Key

some plasterers do not devil float these days, they think that multi finish has a good adhesion and they do not want scratch lines to make the skimming a slower process.

It'll be fine until you put a steamer on it to get paper off then it will blow however many years down line, like malc says it's becoming popular not to key backing coat

I was always taught to key it... would be interesting to see a comparison

2 pins one end of the float. I always key floating but I wouldn't lose sleep if I had to skim someone else's smooth floating.

I want to "agree"......always key your backing coat.......anything less will put us on the slippery slope......lol

Skimming has become a subject of much confusion to some so called plasterers with all the different methods and tools involved and now it is starting with floating :crying:. for what its worth it called a key for a reason.
Keying & deviling takes skill - too deep and your fooked, too shallow and your fooked. After I devil up I always run my trowel over the surface to lay down the snots...saves scraping the next day before skimming, a lot of guys I've worked with don't

Always key , bonding, s&c , everything,I ve known a painter to roll the walls of newly plastered walls that hadn't been keyed and the finish was coming off on his roller.
We won't talk about that job again how much easi fill did you use to get u out of a hole that time :sorprendido3:

If it came off it was due to suction control, not mechanical key. Saying that, if it's more than 5m2 , I'll fcuk up my float with screws and devil it cos it looks sexy
