Hi all,

I have been made redundant from my work after 9 years. Banking industry.

Looking at re-training as a plasterer which i know takes years before the haters start!!!!

There's a 6 week course which I can go on funded (since I have been made redundant).

After which I want to plaster my 4 bedroom house which I have purchased (currently a shell).

I would employ a plasterer to work with me on doing my house hopefully picking up more and gaining more confidence.

I am also keen to get another property to work on after this (buy to let).

Should I then try to get a job as a plasterers mate?.........What are your thoughts please people.

PS I am based in Scotland.

Get a plasterers mate/labourer job if you can, although if someone local to you unlikely gonna train you up to be his competition. My advice would be do a plumbing or electrical crash course get certified, do landlord checks and small jobs like kitchens and bathrooms

If it's a trade you want then I'd choose plumbing if I was in your position, if your heart is set on plastering definitely do the free course and try and get a plasterers labourer/mate job.

I might be wrong but I think you'll be lucky to get someone to take you on and train you up. It's dog eat dog no matter what people say no one will want to train you up to become their competition - there's plenty of that as is.

Where in Scotland are you?

With respect if you have come from the banking industry, plastering may not be the trade to go for. Plumbing as already said or decorating.
It's a tough dirty game this

Mind you that said, it's common knowledge you lot are greedy c@@nts so maybe a good fit after all

I'd say you seem more interested in doing properties up and making some dosh , TBH that's probably better route to take than doing course and then plastering , most people can skim quite quickly with a bit of guidance but it's all the rest of the crap that takes at least 5 years to master, don't get me wrong if you want to do it go for it but it's hard, rough and probably more stressful job than it my appear from outside looking in and most on here have knackered up knees, back or head because of it.

Best of luck though

craig, you are from banking which is a long way from building and construction. you can employ a couple of plasterers and other contractors who will turn your property round for a reasonable cost quickly.
you know how to raise finance, go and purchase some more properties if you think there is money to be made. your job will be suppling the finance and planning your labour force and dealing with builders merchants.

I am from Fife.

Not appreciating that comment about being a greedy ******. My role in banking was to help international businesses.

In terms of it being dog eat dog etc my properties are in Fife but I now live in Perth so would cover that area along with Tayside.

I also looked into a gas engineering course which is 26 weeks long and £8k which isnt funded. From what you guys are saying that would probably be a better career choice.

I really dont get why people are so abusive on these threads. Pretty pointless.

My mate used to work in banking - lost his job and did some labouring for me...almost killed him, it was hilarious to watch

This idea is a win win for you, because you could still keep the whistles on whilst also still being a c@@t pmsl

Hi mate, you don't give your age, but I assume you are fit and able. Plastering is a great trade, a real craft with many facets to be mastered. I deduce as others have said, that your plan for the future involves a bit of property developement and profit (all good).
You might try night school training as either chippie (good for structure/roofing/1st & 2nd fix), sparks (plenty of other work for qualified sparks), plumber (good rates, plenty of work)......or follow the six week plan and be,prepared to get dirty, sweaty, tired....really tired.
I would do one of the other three.

Wouldn't be on my phone if I was sir.

At dinner table thank you
Have your dinner then mate and dont argue with @theplasterman aka vince, aka vincy, aka pete

I f**k**g love plastering though....sweaty, dirty and tired but content...living the dream in the midlands

Dont listen to them Craig, you mix plaster, chuck it on the wall, flatten it down. Do the same again, chuck a little water at it then job done, easy as.

It is a messy stressy job plastering, especially if you want to earn well from the game. After a while though, It does full fill the hunter gatherer part of the male homosapien.

Didnt see this post before....you sound a bit precious so maybe another office job is the way to go...you need to be able to take a bit of banter in trades so it would probably eat you up

A bit precious.........hilarious thing to say. Ive bought and sold houses and dealt with all sorts of banter. Im also a football referee and get s**t every weekend. I have never spoken to any of you and that was just bad crack when this is life changing.

Im 32, 6'3 and anything but precious which is why banking is not for me.

Anyway... night school training does also sound good.

Does anybody roughcast also? Seems another good thing to try and get into to diversify my skills
