I'm a brickie, want to k rend top half of my house.

You guys and your machines make me chuckle. We'd have the render on the wall and levelled off on a job that size before you'd finished knobbing about with the pressure gauge and squirting bags into the skip. Its literally 4 5bag mixes.

In answer to the OP.

Prime the walls with R7, 5mm of HP12 base left with a key the first day. 12mm of the top coat of your choice the next day, rule it off so its pretty level, then once you cant get your thumb nail in it scrape 2mm off with an I bar to get flat and textured and use a scraper to lightly finish your scratch off if you feel it needs it.

Not rocket science, as much as some here seem to make out.

Do you not have a machine?

Do you not have a machine?

Yes, we have a few. Wouldn't bother with it for a job that size.

We do a fair bit of render that you can't spray (brick) even if you wanted to. You get just get used to knocking up large mixes and getting it on in double quick time.

What machines do you have

They not being not nice ,tbh I normally like the advice jimbob gives but for you to take on a render job I have to agree with the rest.
It's disaster waiting happen.
Most plasterers see it as kind of like disrespect for what we do and know.

The mans a brickie, he's got most of the skill set, just needs to know how to apply it. It's not like he's some guy in a suit having a play. The hardest bit is the knowing when to scratch when you haven't used the stuff before. As long as he checks it every 30 mins he'll figure it out.

It's his house, worse that happens is he knocks it off, no biggie.

Theres always going to be negative and positive views on here like you say most guys on here spend there life learning and don't particularly like to see a job done bad.
To be perfectly honest I know your not going to listen about getting a good renderer in for certain issues like time.
You've admitted your happy to have ago and take it off if it cocks up so it doesn't see the problem . It will be waste of money or time but your satisfaction takes over that.
I know now it's made you more keen to have ago and prove everyone wrong. I'd say k rend is the easier of the options of render so just have ago everyone has different methods Alls id say if you can is to do a smaller area first take your time setting them beads make sure you prepare right. Make sure your mixes are consistent I feel you'd struggle with one coat as you won't have the control over the trowel but two coats and ruling them off to get you to your twelve mill. Good luck you should definitely post pictures you've got my interest.

I for one can't be bothered to explain from scratch to someone that has never rendered before how to do the job. If he wants to have a go himself he should just get a spec from K Rend, build a wall and practice on it.

As mentioned above a lot will disagree but I think his ego is going to do it anyway. I'm sure there's been a lot of times we have all just wanted to have ago at doing something that may be out of our skill range. The end of the day it's his house he's not ripping a customer off or leaving a bad job for anyone but himself.

Who is it a disaster for? What's the worst that can happen , it's s**t, i take it off.
Think about it from my perspective. I get to do it on my terms, when i want, no hanging around and not having to deal with renderers suckin'each other off saying " specialist work this" under no circumstances should anyone attempt to do this, you'll f**k it up. I might , granted, i might also nail it and then , much more importantly to me, i say to myself, " i did that"

There's lots of non plasterers and punters who come and have a look in this forum, its certainly beneficial to you renderer folk to protect your positions by scaremongering about all the pitfalls and shoddy work that goes on. And therein lies another problem, only get someone who is accreditted by the render manufacturer's you might say. Yeah , but there all way too busy i can do it in two weeks or three or two months, so i pick a so called plasterer / renderer and they f**k it up.
Someone has just had done on their house what i want to do on mine, a low sun was shining on it tonight , high's and low's all over the place, misses and portholes everywhere, couple of beads awry.

I'll have a go at it theplasterman, i've done some before, an external wall about 5m long by about 1.5 m long in Germany. I didn' t know what render it was , i just did what my German wife and the father in law told me to do, there was abase coat , plastic mesh and a top coat. The tool i used for scratching up was different to the ones i've seen over here , it left a much more textured finish.
Father in law was happy, and it looked just like the render on the house, and that was having my mrs translate all the information to me..

We'll see buddy....if i nail it, i'll put some pics up, if i f**k it up you'll never know, nor likely to care...

More power to ya my man. I'm interested in seeing your pics if no one else is. You'll be right. Think about running a stop bead under your eaves if you can, give you a straight edge to work to instead of rendering straight up. That can be the rough looking area for those that aren't used to it.

Fair enough suppose I shouldn't of said owt , half guys on here think I'm mad , lol there right !

To be sane you have had to drop off the edge once in a while to know the difference , hence those who believe themselves to be sane not knowing the difference are generally barking.

Easier for you if you do other stuff, would be hard going if you only spread and render over there, what finish do they put on the walls when its not venetian

Plenty come here and end up permanently smashed.
Trouble is people always externalise their problems i.e. Moving somewhere else, getting married, having a kid, buying new house , car ,boat etc etc will make them happy !! Fix the bit they feel is missing.
One day just maybe they will stop and realize everything they thought they needed to be happy was nt real, and what they had /have is all they really needed . Just couldn't see it. :)
