Two and one gang looking for work

You need a time machine - go back to the 70's and 80's to see how 'Real Men' worked for £3,000- a week (on their own too) ... It's all a matter of Organisation, getting up early, and not taking breaks to go on your phone and check out Facebook every five minutes .... OH .... and actually putting...

    ceiling cracked every joint

Were you one of those Bods who tack 'along' the joists rather than the correct way 'across' the joists? Just a thought, but usually the reason when cracking as you describe here :-(

    Rates going back 20 years??

YEP! That would about right! BUT! We weren't hampered anywhere NEAR as much by Health & Safety as you are today and we could do a Street-a-Week (walls Only) to get the yardage in. Late 60's/to mid-70's we were working for £0-50p per Sq Yard in the Berks, Bucks & Hants area. 2 x coat sand &...

    Speedskim do I don’t i

It's not the trowel you use, it's the 'graft' you put in. I used to float/set 35 yards a day regularly with a 12" Tyzac. These 'new' additions to the tool kit are simply to keep an ailing 'tools economy' from going under :-( P.S. My profile shows me as a 'new member'. In fact, I've been here...

Advice ; Going rate for pricework per m2 on-site in 2017?

I'd be interested to know too. In the early 70's it was average £0.50p 'per sq yard' Float&Set - sand and cement with a three-coat Siraphite finish. Still used to manage about £250- a week though (Before all that Health&Safety nonsense

    The Speed Of This Forum

Such a shame this Forum is Sooooooo Slooooooow these days. (A little less advertising would speed up the site :-) Yahoo had the same problem with their Homepage - Now less Ads = Faster load-time. I know Ads pay for the forum, but what good is that if Google kicks it into touch for being TOO...

Unhappy with plastering work but unsure what to expect?

It's sad to say; But you've been 'had' - and not a lot you can do now. Also, don't assume because you're here that any offers to put it right by any of these members will guarantee a good job :-( There's no substitute for 'Due Diligence', and genuine 'personal referrals' that you can...

    Plaster coming off screw heads

. . Sounds like plasterboard being jammed 'too' tight up against ceiling. Should have at 'least' a 1/4" gap between ceiling and wall - OOPS!

    Anyone else ever leave notes

. . Found some interesting notes/letters once; Was working in local mansion house being renovated. Pulled off some panneling to find several letters pushed behind from the window sill area. Mainly from politicians and ONE from Winston Churchill - naturally the owner was well chuffed and...

    External painted render in sunlight

. . The next plasterer you use should definitely get a 'full' scaffold put up. You 'can' re-render over the painted finish if the surface is prepped bu using a smallish angle grinder to cut a cross-hatch pattern accross the whole surface (tiresome I know but worth it) then use a bonding agent...

    Looking to change career

If you make the change, be sure to go with a spread who has a 'real' reputation for good practice and competence. Too many #Cowboys floating around, so choose wisely :-)

    Dodgy Plasterers in the UK?

We sometimes get hung up on the standard of plastering offered up here in the UK. Recently I checked out some of our American cousins 'instructional' videos on Youtube :RpS_wink: If you want a good chuckle you might do the same.

    Young lads plastering

OH, I'm really sorry to hear that, several of my old work-mates have passed recently, and now with Andy going last week, it makes you feel really mortal all of a sudden. Your Dad and Andy had a pretty good innings though, and that's a blessing at least. Time goes by so fast the older you get...

    Young lads plastering

Andy had quite a few of his relatives working for him back then, and imported many more of his friends from Ireland to keep up with all the work - Our paths very likely crossed but I'm useless at names, more a faces chap . Though we're all pretty unrecognizable to each other now :-)

    Young lads plastering

Not too sure - I was replying to Dominic Regans reply to you as I worked alongside them and Maxi'n'John. But if he worked for Andy in the 70's and 80's then I'm sure I would've done :-) I was really sorry to hear of Andy's passing recently - Very sad.

    Young lads plastering

Just saw this post on Google. I worked alongside Maxi on Andy Morans jobs Lower Earley, Crown wood, Sandhurst etc. He fascinated me at first until I started copying his work ethic. I quickly became as fast and at one point faster. We'd get 8 ton loads of sand and use it all by the end of the...

    Drywall Adhesive with Coving

Dry wall adhesive is great if you work it as a slightly thicker paste. Be sure to use fairly hot water for sponging down and it comes off clean as a whistle :-)

    Advice please

Do it with the proviso that they only pay you what they think the job is worth. As most people are honest and you're a friend of the family chances are they'll feel guilty not giving you a decent cheque :-)
